There are many reasons for the popularity of the Waves for African American males:
1. Women like the softer textures and love the waves. Men with great waves are often sought after for the softness of their strands.
2. Waves are popular for professionals because it is considered in business to be a more professional appearance.
3. It is possible to combine other popular African American male styles with waves.
Other popular styles include:
1. Totally shaved where there is just skin/scalp (like Isaac Hayes & Seal & D.B. Woodside - shown below)

2. Bald (Isaac Hayes) to semi-bald fade where there is a shadow of hair (Roger R. Cross as Curtis Manning on 24).
Shown below to the Left, Roger has a semi-bald fade all around with some tapering. To the Right is Randy Jackson - American Idol Judge with bald fade at the sides with 1/8 to 1/4" of hair on top.
Jeremy Suarez from Bernie Mac (below to the left) has a version that is a cross between a fade and a college boy but if you look close you may even see a slight wave pattern forming.
3. College boy style with or without faded sides (similar to #2 but with longer strands all around. (Roger R. Cross) 4. Short tight natural where the hair is allowed to grow to about 1-2 inches with or without slight or bald fading on the sides.
