50mm First-Wash Report

that boink wave is phenom

Well, after a night in the boinks, it looked pretty wavy again--almost like the original 50mm. I didn't even use any heat on it. I love boinks! (Don't mind that dorky one that's still in the top of my head....)

then, i slept with my hair in a braid that night, the next morning:

the day after, another braid (slept in):

so i guess i retain the wave with braids!

Not really--I don't think they've aided in preserving the initial wave much, but they do seem to encourage more wave when I set it in boinks last night. Then again, I waited 5 days to wash it this time, whereas last time, I only waited 2 days, so those extra 3 days of wear may have loosened it somewhat, too. Last time, I had some problems with roughness (which I now attribute to using too many products and heat), but this time it's still so silky. It's hard to remember exactly what I did then compared to what I'm doing now.

As you said, it's really quite easy to add wave/curl to this hair as long as you have the right tools; it's just a matter of figuring out how to replicate the 50mm wave exactly. Hot rollers, boinks, and braids all work quite well, but I think I'm going to take another look at the 50mm in the bag to see exactly how that wave pattern is on arrival, then play around with it a bit. The big, jumbo rollers get pretty close to the initial look anyway. The biggest hot rollers I've found are 1 3/4 inch, but I think this 50mm might be closer to a 2 1/4- or 2 1/2-inch roller curl; if so, it's probably best re-created with Velcros and the bonnet.

I'm not sure that the fabric softener affects it too adversely. The last 50mm I had dropped without using any fabric softener at all. But again, it still looks very nice. :)

Sara: I actually didn't use any conditioner, just shampooed the roots, spritzed the hair with a little diluted fabric softener, and left it to air-dry (no brushing). When it was totally dry, I spritzed it with Dome Care and detangled with my fingers and a wide-tooth comb. But again, the water I used was warm (not hot, but definitely not cold), and perhaps that's enough to loosen the wave. Either way, after sleeping with the boinks (4 of em), it's quite wavy now, so I won't even need to use any rollers or anything. It's also still very soft and silky.

I'm going to try that washing suggetstion, AMM. I never thought of it before, but it makes a lot of sense.

Mocha: Yeah, I'll be getting the bonnet soon. My hair's really long, so I'm sure that contributes to a loss of curl as well, although yours is pretty long too, if I remember correctly.

I think "boinks" is just something I must've made up or something, because it seems like I'm the only one who's ever heard of it, lol. Anyway, it's just basically coiling and twisting up your hair into a bun and covering it with a schrungi--but instead of doing one for your whole head, you'd do 4 or 6, whatever--the more boinks you do, the wavier the results.

In fact, if you had the hair in the boinks, then blasted it with the blow-dryer for a few minutes before you went to sleep, the results might be even wavier in the morning; I haven't tried that, but I'll try it tonight.
