I'm not sure, but if tight braids are worn over a long duration, I don't think that traction alopecia is reversible.

You can see the hairlines of many African American women are quite sparse, that's the result of the long term use of tight braids.

Yikes! I've heard of that happening a lot with weaves, actually.

I should've clarified, but the few bald spots I have are actually on the top of my head, where I've never worn extensions, so they must have been caused by something else.

I don't think the braids used for heat-seals and pinchbraids are tight enough to the head to cause the same kind of tension that cornrows can potentially cause. But that's only my theory--I'm sure any method, applied incorrectly, could cause the hair to thin out.

Is traction alopecia reversible at all, or is it a permanent thing?

:)

Did you try Rogaine? Seriously. They sell rogaine for women over the counter at the pharmacy and at some of the bigger grocery stores. I've heard it works from a couple of men. You have to actually have some hair for it to work - it doesn't work if you're already bald as a cue ball. Which I'm assuming you're not! My bro-in-law said rogaine did actually arrest his receding hairline once he started using it. Maybe it will give your pulled out hair a kick to get growing again.

You can most definitely get bald spots from weaving that's too tight and sometimes the hair will not grow back.  It's called traction alopecia.

I wore a weave for 5 years, and while I did not get bald spots, I think it did thin out my hair in the temple areas, and it has not grown back in, and I have not worn a weave for 6 years or so.

I have a bald spot and a couple of thin spots from a weave I once had that was put in too tight.  THis was about 5 years ago and the hair hasn't grown back.

I have a few tiny bald spots on my head, actually. But they don't seem to be spreading, thank God. I could be wrong, but I think it might be a fairly common thing. :)

Generally yes, they will grow back even if it's pulled out. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the follicles were damaged when the hair was pulled on? It's also possible that something more serious is occurring, like a skin problem. Might want to have a dermatologist look at it.

Oh, this one's kind of obvious...but you don't have a scar there, do you? Or maybe you developed one from scratching your head there? Hair doesn't grow back on scar tissue for a few years afterwards.

The first set of extensions I ever had were done about 3 years ago and since then it seems as though I was left with a tiny bald spot, or very thin section of hair. Since then I've avoided putting extensions in that area because I'm guessing that it came out because the row of hair was weaved in so tight. However, it seems as though its not growing back. Will hair grow back if its pulled from the root? I cant figure out why its not. Im taking Biotin and a mulitvitamin containing B12, know of any others that are good for hair growth (im 19!) and if it will grow back.... thank ~nikki~
