This is a great site (Juliana found this one long time ago):  http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/4266/color.html
It gives a lot of information on what hair is made of (under "Hair Chemistry" and what happens to hair when it's dyed.  It does not address specifically the question of water getting into the hair, but it does have a place where you can ask the site's writer a question (I found one by clicking on "Hair Chemistry" under "Chemical Services and Chemistry" at the bottom of this page.

My guess would be that dying it would allow even more water to get in the hair because it makes it more porous, but I don't know.

i was wondering about hair dyes. do they prevent water from entering the hair shaft?

i am asking this questions becasue it has been a debate in the south east asian muslims countries whether its true or not. it has something to do with our cleaning ritual that has to do with water reaching every part of the body including hair. although i do have my own reasons why it is ok, but i wanted other people, professional and amaeturs view on it.

i think because of this dilemma not many people dye their hair in malaysia and indonesia. only 20 % of the population dyes their hair here and that is mostly chinese people. it is pale with korean and japanese where almost 70% of the population dyes their hair in some way.
