I tink it must be a item by item issue.

We have MSDS on stycast that says its all kinds of safe once fully cured.

But you don't get stycast at the hardware store that's for sure.

It could be the difference b etween adhesive epoxies and encapsulants in general?

and i realise what the state of california thing means.  its just that to word some so serious in such an ambiguous way is amusing to me.  You'd think after they went to all this trouble they'd at least bother to hire someone to make the message clear.  Especially since I'm not in california and i work with a bunch of non native english speakers.  with the wrong circumstances and the poor english the way it's written you could honestly think it was safe unlessin california.  okay not likely but yeah clarity.  its a good thing.

Mocha, I think that when they say "known to the state of California" may mean something along the lines that the state of California may have done some intenstive testing on it's own that other states or agencies haven't done.  Kind of like how there are different laws in different states. 

Anyways, where did you read that once the epoxy is set that it's not harmful?  Because I have specifically read that it IS still harmful once dry.

Hey Bird a few things

One I have seen that 'Known to the state of California stuff" all over things I use all the time.  Is it real probably.  Do they some times word it "Known to cause *horrible stuff* in the state of California"  as if it doesn't cause problems elsewhere.  It just amuses me.

Two you should definitely wear gloves no doubt.  But there are so many different kinds of epoxy that its important you get the MSDS ont he one you are actually using.

Three in my not so humble opinion solid resin liquid catalyst epoxies are the best.

Four once the epoxy has set up there is no longer a risk.  So while the person doing the tipping needs to be careful the people wearing the hair do not need to worry. unless you are going to cut the tips open. and once again it depends a lot on the particular epoxy.

That said, I would want to build a little mold that had say 50 stick shaped holes in it.  Then you would shove the hair in and pour the mixed epoxy in from the top.  let it set 10 20 30 minutes hour days whatever is appropriate.  pop them out and go again.  But that seems like a lot of work unless you are going to mass produce tips.  and the mold would help with epoxy made tips but not ones that need to evaporate to dry.

Yeah epoxy is great for some things.  Delin are you pressing the epoxy through like you would with glue and then rolling?  or just putting a drop on the ends?

Not trying to bring up the epoxy debate again, but just wanted to warn you Amanda.  Whether or not you decide to heed the warnings, you are still entitled to at least know them.  I have copied and pasted information from the MSDS (material safety data sheet that is required by the the government).

EPOXY RESIN WARNING

 THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS A CHEMICAL(S) KNOWN TO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO CAUSE CANCER, BIRTH DEFECTS OR OTHER REPRODUCTIVE HARM

The National Safety Council has issued a warning on Epoxy Resins Systems and hazards encountered during their use. It is possible to develop a contact dermatitis from contamination of the skin with these materials, so it is important that you know of this warning and heed it.

Some liquid epoxy resins contain active skin and eye irritants;

  • When the skin is contaminated with these materials, contact dermatitis may result.
  • Eye contact may cause severe eye damage.
  • Vapors from materials which have hardened for several days can still cause sensitization of the persons who have become sensitized previously, if special care during the grinding, sawing, drilling and polishing is not taken.
  • Dust from these operations should be avoided, and breathing filters worn.
  • It is also necessary to establish meticulous working habits.
  • Bench tops, floor surfaces and all work areas should be covered with disposable materials.
  • An adequate supply of paper towels should be available to wipe up spills and splashes.
  • Tools and other equipment which has been in contact with the Epoxy should be cleaned, and equipment and materials of disposable nature must be discarded as soon as possible.

The reaction to the Epoxy may be delayed for several days or even months., Any person suffering from respiratory symptoms, headache, skin reactions, or other complaints after working with the resins should seek medical aid immediately.

Anyone working extensively with these materials should seek and read all available literature.

Remember to read carefully all the directions which come with such materials before beginning to use them.

What about latex and nail glue guys?  Or just using LG?  I daren't use the epoxy.  I'm worried about that cancer risk xxx

I use high heat epoxy.  When they come out, they look like they did when they went in and there is 0 shedding.

I would take a tongue depressor and "smush" some of the latex glue through the last inch of hair and then put some LG over it and smush it through again. Tnen flip it over and do it again, but not with quite as much product!

well i was going to use some proclaim super bond only cuz i have loads of it... although i find the hair sheds with that stuff... it just doens't seem to hold as well as LG... so i think i'll end up using liquid gold to tip my PH...

Latex will do in a pinch but I like LG.
Not what people seem to want to hear though...

Well I was going to crack on with tipping my PH this week but now I don't know what to tip it with.  My hairdresser came last night and said that she had tipped some acrylic hair with keratin and put it in with rings and that it seemed to dissolve and come away from the acrylic after washing.  Its fine in the rings with the human hair she installed just not with the acrylic.  I'm just wondering as I will also be using rings if you guys could suggest what would be the best thing to tip my PH with so I can get started.  I'm so glad I found this out now before I had installed my hair yikes xx
