Never never put layers, they are hard to work with and can look horrible. I just finished cutting out my layers and it took a good year before it was all on length what she will end up doing is cutting the layers out and she will be back to where she started. Not good.

My hair seemed to get stuck at about that length too. Experiment with different ways to put it up or in a braid. I kept mine up or back out of the way and after awhile noticed that it was indeed still growing.

As someone else who is trying to let her hair grow, has hair about shoulder length, and a fair amount of layering (about 4 inches), I urge your wife to NOT cut layers into it. They do absoluelty nothing for my hair. Every day I I contemplate cutting my hair up to the layer and starting the growing all over again. Tell her to just leave it alone! Try using accessories. Do NOT cut it! Least of all layers, especially if her hair is not at least medium in thickness.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think she`s going to get a very small amount of layering done (2 in max) so that most of her hair will be in one length. Thanks again for your reply.

John,

As one who looks horrible with all-one-length hair I can sympathize. She should consider some light layering around her face. Would she look good with some wispy bangs? It depends on her final goal. If she wants it long and all one length, she should just experiment with different updos, braids, etc. If not, have some layers put in.
