I use Suave Professions Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner.  They both have UV protection in them.  I also use VO5 whipped Mousse which also has UV protection.  I get my hair Foiled and I am outside quite a bit and I can't tell that my color lightens or any noticeable damage to the ends.

I always wear a hat in the sun - I think it good for your HEAD.

Hi Katja,

In my case, the sun-damaged ends are lighter in color (some of the pigment has leached out), and are more prone to tangle and split-ends.  I sometimes wear a bandana as a doo-rag, or a baseball cap, or both.  They definitely help since the sun's rays are most focused on the top of the head (at least, in mid-day in Florida, when the sun's rays are the strongest).

It's best to wear a hat!  But that's no fun when you want to show off your lovely locks.  You could put some true sunscreen in a spray bottle of water and lightly spritz your hair, if you're at the beach or in the sun all day.  But, that might make for a greasy head.  I don't trust SPF's in hair care products.  There are no true governmental regulations for them, like in regular sunscreens.

Silicone serums would be your best bet to protect the cuticle of your hair.  Protecting the cuticle is a goal to keep hair healthy.  The sun destroys the cuticle, so does coloring.  Just use lots of heavy conditioners on your hair if you are in the sun.  I don't think silicone serums let the suns UV rays into the cuticle.  FYI, silicone serums are the ones that look like clear water in small bottles in almost any line of hair products.

There are conditioners that contain sunscreen...  I know that Suave's professional line has conditioner that contains sunscreen.

Hi guys,

I've always known that the sun can be damaging to hair, but lately I've been reading some things that make me think the sun is worse than I'd imagined.  What kind of hair damage does the sun actually do?  Is there any kind of hair sunscreen I can invest in to prevent this damage?  Or is it really not a big deal?

Just wondering.
