No, It is not unusal. I have this request alot and honor their wishes.
I would recommend while you are growing out the layers to have your layers very lightly trimmed every other haircut. I am talking 1/8 of an inch and show your stylist this amount on a ruler you will bring with you. This prevents them from getting split and dry.

I have long hair (bra-strap length) that is currently layered from my nose down (front to back). I have see pictures recently of celebs whose hair is layered, but it just looks like it is lightly layered in the front and in the back. The only kind of layers I have had seem like they really cut into the hair. Is this making sense? Anyway, I am thinking of just keeping the layers around the face and then in the back having about 2-3 inches of layers. Is this an unusual request or do some of you have this?
