You have a Ponderosa too......I thought we were the only ones with the Grand Buffet! :-)

I keep hearing that rumor about harmful protein as well. I say there`s absolutely no proof protein or similar conditioning agents will weaken your hair. People also blame silicone deriavatives as well, but the truth is conditioner is best at coating the hair shaft and not penetrating--that takes something with a high pH like perming or coloring. Protein treatments work by coating the shaft and filling in gaps between cuticles (the damaged, weak parts.) That makes your hair shinier, softer and somewhat stronger. All the research I`ve done indicates the worst that can happen with repeated protein usage is buildup, which can leave hair dull or hard. There`s an easy solution: just deep shampoo once a week. I really wouldn`t put a lot of stock in the protein scare, because conditioner really can`t damage your hair. It`s like saying painting the outside of your car red will change the interior`s color. Good luck! :-)

Amber, when you say "up in a ponytail," do you mean a high ponytail at the top of your head, a la the girls in "Grease"? Or can it be low, at the nape of your neck?

A low ponytail puts less stress on the hair.

Also, you`re better off using a hair accessory that cinches the hair loosely instead of gripping it. And the less you have to pull your hair "through" something, as with a pony elastic, the better.

Metal barrettes, hair elastics with metal bits, and rubber bands (blah!) can break your hair. You`re better off with completely-covered elastic hair bands, Scrunchies, bands with "hooks" that you wrap around your ponytail and then fasten, or those cuffs that are held in place underneath with a stick. I also like giant hair clips.

Oh, and this site used to sell leather accessories that wrapped loosely around the pony and then could be pulled taut like a lasso. Those were gentle.

That being said, I doubt you have to worry unless you`re really scraping your hair back into a supertight ponytail that puts tension on the scalp.

As long as you do not pull your hair back too tight and leave it the pony tail in too long, your hair will be fine. Doing it too tight can lead to traction alopecia - the hair falls out and it will not grow back. Think of Steve Wonder and the singer Sade. Steve`s cornrows have resulted in a receding hair line while Sade`s trademark slicked hair has also caused her hair to recede (I recently noticed she no longer wears it that way).

My best advice: Use a covered band or a scrunchi and don`t pull too tight.

I`m sorry, I`m not familiar with the theory of protein weakening your hair. However, I can see too much conditioner causing it to lay flat and not appear to be bouncy. I have used Anti-Snap in the past and find it to be a fine product.

Good luck! ;)

Ok.. first off.. I work at Ponderosa as a waitress. We have to wear our hair up in a pony tail. Since I have to wear it up about every day... can that harm my hair any?? ... make it weak.. or thin out?

Number 2... I bought some Redken Anti-snap.... it is supposed to help strenghthen your hair. But I`ve heard that the protein in it can also weaken your hair. Do any of you know?

Hopefully someone will answer me (o:
