I am not misusing this machine, I am using it as instructed. Try making more than 20 thermo tips in a row and see if it happens to you. If it doesn't, it's just my machine malfunctioning, and if it does, than we know for sure that you can't use thermo with this machine.
I did over 20+ in a row already. So far nothing. But I'm always checking the gears cause I'm really scared myself too.
I have to say that I tried making pretips with the thermo just as you described it, on manual mode, and counting for 5 seconds. I see the bubbles beforehand and don't get cobwebs after the tip is taken out.

I'm not crazy, I swear! I can feel the thermo get very hot in my fingers right after the tip is made. Tips made with human hair do not feel that hot. The thermo gets so hot that it melts the tape in the cartridge. I have seen it happen with my own eyes!

Which way are you holding the machine? {BACKWARDS WITH THE TRIGGER IN FRONT OF ME} I am holding it with blue cover facing me, I think. It seems like a can get pretty close.
What thermo seamless did you use? {AD}
I was making pretipped strands today, and I made about 50 human hair strands, and then I switched to the thermfiber. After 14 thermofiber strands, the tape in the cartridge did that same thing again, getting stuck and twisted up around the silver gear post on the right hand side. This time I just carefully untwisted it from the gear post, retighted the back 2 spools, and it was ok to use again.
I did not make any more thermo tips after that, but I did make some more of human hair, and it was fine. So that's why I conclude that this machine can't be used to make tips of thermo or mono fibers.
{MAYBE IT HAS TO DO WITH THE WAY YOU ARE DOING IT? I DON'T USE THE AUTO. I LET IT HEAT UP TILL IT BUBBLES, THEN I PRESS ON THE TRIGGER, COUNT FOR 5 SECS, MOVE THE STRAND A LITTLE BIT DOWN AND RELEASE THE TRIGGER! IT COMES OUT FLAT AND EVEN, NO 'COBBWEBS'.}

Although this method looks like fusion when it is applied to the head, it is not the traditional fusion. Once applied it, the bond feels hard, like a glue fusion bond does, but this bond is easily removed by reheating and then I wiped away the residue with vegetable oil! Very easy!
I put a few on myself, and so far no shedding (traditional fusion sheds) and no slipping. I even pulled on it hard with wet hair, and it's firmly in there. {ANY FUSION WON'T SHED AS LONG AS EVERY SINGLE THREAD OF HAIR IS COATED WITH THE GLUE- SWEAR TO YOU. IT COULD BE THE CHEAPEST HAIR, TRUST ME IT WON'T SHED AS LONG AS YOU GOT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE BABIES COATED REALLY GOOD!!! SOMETIMES I HAVE TO RECOAT THE SAME STRAND WITH THE EM. I HATE THAT. I STILL GOT MORE PRACTICE THOUGH }

I just did my client's hair with thermo- but only a few EM in the front and thermo seamless in the back. You can get really close if you turn the machine the other way. So far, I'm getting the hang of it and my strands are the flattest I have ever seen them!
Are you talking about a Extendmagic class? I just got the machine and have been playing around with it, so I'm no expert yet! This coming week I'll do my first full head install. I put a few highlights on some clients , and I put a couple on myself as highligts, and so far so good.
One thing I would say is that you can't use either monofiber or thermofiber with the machine. When those fibers are heated they get too hot and that breaks the tape cartridge and then the tape gets all tangled around the inside gears. So this method is for human hair only.
I don't think you guys need classes in this. The dvd that comes with it demonstrates the method pretty well.

I did not take Lishas class. I took my class from Marcella Ellis. However... The two sites describe their methods almost verbatum. So, possibly Marcella trained through Lisha? Don't know that as factual.
I was disappointed in my class...it could have been far more in depth. I'm still tweaking that method as far as placement and rows.

I was just looking in this month's American Salon and saw an ad for Lisha's Malaysian technique. I did a search of the board and saw a few mentionns but didn't find anything definitive. I think I remember you took the class. What did you think (if so). Thanks.
