QuoteReplyTopic: Do you go to the salon for anything? Posted: October 19 2005 at 11:15pm
I only go to the a salon for things i cannot do myself. like braiding my hair, or when i went last month to put in a sew in weave. other than that no way eventhough i might go for a relaxer as my hair is so course and thick that i can not manage relaxing it anymore. but the main reason i do not like going to the salon is their cutting your hair off saying that they are cutting off damage end and end up cutting off 1/2 your hair.
Hi everyone I'm new to this forum and I figured I would start here LOL
Since I go to a dominican salon ($10 for wash and set) I generally go to the salon every week in the spring and summer and after taking out long term braids(box)and every other week during fall and winter months. I bring my own products (shampoo, conds. treatments, color and relaxers) and will purchase treatments from them every now and then.
They say that hair is ones crowning glory..With or without it I am still a QUEEN!

The last time I went to the salon was 6months ago for a trim. I actually need to go back but I just want the ends dusted, not "trimmed" because it seems like stylists equate trim with 1-2 inches and I KNOW I don't need that much trimmed off. Anyone in the NYC area know of a good spot???
I go to my stylist once a month for a relaxer. At one point I was going every week for a wrap but it started to get too expensive so I now wrap my own hair.
I'm picky too. There is an Egyptian owned hair salon not far from where I live and all the woman I see coming out of there have armpit hair or longer. (Not weave. I checked!!) I may go there for a trim because I am in need of a good one. But I'm going to scope the place out further.

I go to the salon regulary, mainly for relaxer, trim, sometimes just wash DT & set. Love the results either way (at home or salon roller sets).
I find it so interesting that it is almost a way of life here in the city to go to the salon (especially if you are relaxed or if you just want to wear your hair straight).
NoNapNique: I don't remember whether you are relaxed or natural or transitioning. This can make a difference. Could be too much tension between the 2 textures when styling is causing the breakage.
Also, I wonder if maybe you need more moisture and maybe even a little protein (protein treatment / followed by a DT). Also, could it be time for a touch up (if relaxed) or a trim? Personally, I don't usually worry about a few hairs flying off or shedding somewhat. In my case, I know that even when my hair looks / feels great, & is thriving and growing, I still get some shedding. Some shedding is normal.
Cookiesncream: Rollersetting is actually pretty good for the hair. Other than the tension caused from securing the rollers w/ pins (which is no worse than tension from braids, or a pony tail or bun) the heat is the only thing that I think some people may want to be cautious of. Definitely sitting under a hooded dryer that is too hot can hurt. But most (or all in my experience) dryers have adjustable heat so that is not really an issue.
Not all rollers are good. Plastic rollers w/ holes are the only ones that I use. These are fine & will not break the hair. Velcro rollers are terrible for the hair as they can rip it out. Also, some people use the wire rollers. I do not love these, the hair does not get as shiny and smooth. Also, many people who do roller sets like to get some of the body out of the hair after taking out the roller. Some blow the hair, which can cause some damage. A doobie (wrap) is effective and better for the hair but in my case, gets my hair too straight.

i go for blowouts but they stress me out becuz im worried that the blow drying is damaging my hair a bit but the idea of doing my own rollersets scares me also becuz i rollers can break the hair too.... correct me if im wrong
I am not sure about others, but I *DEFINITELY* notice more breakage when I roller set... The curls are so PUUURTY when you take the rollers out, then.... when you start trying to style it, short pieces of hair go flying off

I haven't set foot in a salon in a while. I've been doing pretty good w/ my own hair. I'm thinking about finding one to do a good roller set though. Even though I'm pretty good at doing mine, I wanna try and see what results I'd get at a salon.

I only go for braids and that isn't very often because I hate it when i take the braids out....I always get a lot of shedding and I don't know if that is normal. I think I'm going next week for a roller set. Other than that I always do my own hair and it is thriving.
