Hi Scorpio Chich,

The time to trim your layers is when you start to have trouble styling your hair the layers won't work with the style you are trying to keep. Sometimes when your hair starts getting longer the layers start to grow out and your current style doesn't lok good that doesn't mean you can;t style your hair differently and make the grown out layers work for you. I usually tell my steady clients 6 to 8 weeks for you next trim and only a trim just to trim up the layers unless you want a different style alltogether.

Sincerely
Mitch

Hi Mitch,
Thank you for responding to my post. It's been since anyone responded that i almost forgot i even posted the question.

Anyway...since i last posted i went and had alot of layers put in my hair. I told her to KEEP the back as long as possible but yet still trim it a little. She did just that and my hair looked GREAT!! My hair was done like this on july 13 and in NO time my layers started growing out fast. I have another appointment for next week so i think i want layers again. I want alot of layers (my hair is really fine) but i want it long in the back also. Considering you're a hair stylist i'll ask you this. How long should i wait to have my layers cut? i know not as long because they grow like weeds especially when i'm tryin' to keep them shorter than the rest! Yes...i know i'm probably confusing you but i hope you understand what i'm trying to say.

Thanks again....hope to hear from you soon.

Hi scorpio chick,

I've been a hairstylist for 15 years. The lady who cut your hair seems to me like she is trying to get your business and trying to get you to come back. So my advice to you is to find another stylist to cut your hair and be very picks at who you choose. You'll know by the way the person is talking to you and be very direct and to the point when you are speaking to this person tell them what you want to do. I Think 3 months is good for another trim and only a trim cut a little less than a 1/2 inch only to keep the style you have neat and clean. when you get to a length you like then you go every4 to 6 weeks to maintain your style. Please respond and let me know what happens. Good luck and happy hairstylist hunting.

Sincerely
Mitch

Your routine sounds ok. I've seen similar.
Thanks for sharing all that info. That does help.
I would say let it grow for about 3-6 months and see how it looks. In the meantime you can get rid of any splits you find.

It will be up to you whether or not you want your hemline to look perfectly trimmed all the time. Some people want that neatly trimmed look while others want a more natural grown out look. And some want it to be somewhere in the middle.

One factor in this is whether you have a stylist you can trust to only take off the minimum amount. Make sure you specify the amount. If you only want 1/4 inch tell them that you mean 1/4 inch and not 1/4 to 1/2. Don't just say trim because some stylists don't understand that a trim means the minimum. Some hear trim and think cut the hair to the best looking hair. Which is like what you just got. Don't be afraid to bring a friend to watch them or bring a ruler and ask to be shown the hair from the first snip. That first snip, usually done in the back, is the guideline cut. If the stylist cuts 1/4 inch the rest should be 1/4. If they cut 2 inches the rest will be 2 inches. You can also measure your hair before and after. Most of us measure from the forehead back to the hemline. Because it's easier to keep a consistant starting point.

Ask for them to section your hair. I say this because then they will start in the back and the outer hair will be pinned up. They will make the first cut on hair closer to the neck and when the other hair gets unpinned it will cover that hair. So if they make a mistake on that first cut you can tell them that's too short and the outer hair will hide that little spot.

Thanks for the compliments. :)

Thanks everyone for your replies! You all were very helpful.

  PurpleBubba,

Your hair is so beautiful! I went to those links you posted so i got some good tips from you. It says it has alot to do with the climate and condition of your hair? My hair has been color treated but it's not breaking off or nothing. I NEVER use blow dryers, curling irons, hair spray, gel, etc. I do live in the south(Georgia) but not sure if that would have an effect? I do wash it daily and i use infusion 23 leave in conditioner daily. If i miss one day of washing it then it looks really greasy and i can't stand it. I've been using pantene pro-v too so i'm not sure if that's good or not? Anyway...i think that's about it. Should i be doing something different?

One of the things that you can do is snip your own split ends. This means that you go through your hair and search for hairs that have splits anywhere on them. Some splits are not by the ends.
When you see something that looks like some sort of Y shape snip that hair just above it. Be sure to use sharp scissors. Hair scissors are best but many people use sewing scissors. Just be sure that the scissors you use are only used on hair so that they don't get dull. Trimming a split off with dull scissors is defeating the purpose because  it's like tearing through the hair instead of a clean slice.
Avoid razor cuts because those also tear the hair.

You don't have to do the whole head at one time. If you need more help I've written some articles on my homepages

~~ How Often To Trim & Self Split End Trimming ~~
~~ For Maintaining Your Hair Ends Yourself ~~
http://www.angelfire.com/mi/bbubba/LHC/Trim.html

~~ Scissor Information, How To Choose A Good Pair ~~
http://www.angelfire.com/mi/bbubba/LHC/Scissors.html

There's a link to a page by Feye on my site for self trimming. Her page is currently down but if you go over to the Long Hair Support board there should be a thread where you can find a link to a temporary similar page by Anais Satin.

I trim my own hair using Feye's method so I decide for myself when i want to trim. My plan for this year is to do about half an inch every 3 months but I'm also far along on my growing out and not in a hurry.

Some people trim once per year, some twice, some once every other year. It all depends on the individual and their situation.

I used to have long hair and I always had it trimmed every two months, this didn't prevent it from growing, just kept it always looking nice.  I would say, see what your hair looks like in six weeks' time and decide whether you need to book a trim then; if you think you don't, check again a week or two later.

I think that's way too soon if you're wanting to grow it long again. Go read the posts in the long hair section. I hear them all saying they're NOT getting cuts/trims at all! If your hair is healthy I don't think you need to trim at all. Just go once a year if you want ... just go whenever you want to! Twice a year -- whatever. There are no rules. Forget your stylist -- she gave you that look because you're her bread and butter ($$$)!

Hi all,

Just recently i got my hair cut and i don't like it! It was almost down to my waist and i cut it shoulder length. I was wondering how often i should get a trim without having it cut 'too' often. The girl that cut my hair told me to come back in six weeks. I told her that seemed like too soon...instead i want to come back in three months. Well-she looked at me like i was crazy! Anyway...maybe somebody out there can give me some good advice.=)
