It's hard to get black hair or dark hair to a nice looking light brown,
especially if you have naturally black hair. Think about it,
you'll have to bleach your roots every single time they come through and dye light brown again.
I don't understand how your colorist did it...the dye must have had a
lot of peroxide in it. But to get it even lighter..you'll have to
bleach. If I were you I'd leave it to the professionals with this
one - but wait for some more advice also...the people on here know
their stuff!

No, my colorist never did a scalp bleaching. He just did a full color and then for my highlights bleach. (foil) Lastly, toner to after highlights were done.

You might have problems with changing your color with the lifts, If you have naturally black hair . You said you had a salon do the color, did they do a scalp bleach ,before applying the brown color?

Color does not lighten color. So, If your roots are black and your base color is dark brown and if you put more color on your hair, you will not get good results, more like a two tone color. You need to treat the roots as 'virgin' hair and the rest of the hair as colored.
Do you want to get rid of the highlights? If so, then maybe you can use color on the roots only for the recommended time to blend with the light brown and then either 'pull through' the ends for the last minutes or so to cover the highlights or you can tone the whole head after the roots are done. The highlighted pieces will take color different from the base and the roots, so beware of this. The problem I see is getting the correct color, since black to light brown is tough without bleaching first then toning.
Maybe someone else has some advice. Remember, always test strip before applying all over permanent color.

I've been going to the salon the last 2 years getting full color and highlights. (dark brown full color and caramel highlights)
I would like to just color my hair all one light brown color now. My natural color is black. I bought Loreal Professional Feria XtraLifts Cool Brown recently. Is it possible to use this product over my color treated hair? If not, what is the correct way to color my hair in its' current condition?
