Thanks so much for the response! I chickened out of doing my whole head, and only mixed a little up for the gray around my face The test strip seemed to come out fine, so I guess I'll get up the nerve to do the rest soon.
Well, I can't tell you exactly how its going to come out (also I'm not
a pro). I'd suggest doing test strands though (on any parts of
your hair that are highlighted the different colors especially -
depending on how light they are you may or may not get funky
colors). Its better to bail out early if you get a funky color
than trying to fix it later! I don't see any reason you'd have to
wait 3 months.
The dye bottle should say on it how to mix it with the developer,
generally it is half and half. It should also say how long to
leave it on. Generally, 25 minutes is good, 45 minutes is the
maximum.

What a great thing to find this forum! I have some questions about doing color myself.
This is the thing....I went to the same guy for many years, and toward the end he was using Redken Color Gels Chestnut Brown 7NW for my all over color, and then 2 or 3 different highlight colors. He was great at doing my color so that it would grow out gracefully, since he knew that I couldn't maintain it as often as I would have liked to. Basically, since my hair is a mousy cool brown, the Chestnut just warmed it up, and covered any grey I had.
Several months ago, I changed salons and went to a new girl who used Goldwell all over color and highlights. I told her I wanted the all over color to be somewhat close to my natural color so the roots wouldn't be as obvious, but it was lighter - so my roots have grown out 2-3 inches now. Despite this, I was happy with the color and thought I would just go back more often. A few weeks ago, I went in for a cut, the salon just about doubled their prices - and I just can't do a $200 haircut/color right now :-)
I just got a couple bottles of the Redken color, and some #20 Developer.
1) Will there be a problem using the Redken over the lighter Goldwell color - or do I need to wait longer than 3 months since the last coloring? There's a not a huge difference in color, but you can tell its about a shade lighter than my roots.
2) Just to double check what the supply told me....are the color and developer mixed in equal parts?
3) How long do you leave it on? It seems that I remember sitting around waiting in the salon for 30-40 minutes - but I would prefer to use a more exact time, 'cause I don't want to screw this up!
I just ordered an Redken salon book from Ebay, but it hasn't arrived yet, and the gray around my face can't wait any longer :-)
