kind of bleach for bleach/shampoo combo

I've posted in another thread that I am enduring dark-brown-almost-black permanent hair color. I was thinking of quickly apply a bleach/shampoo/conditioner combo to a few thin sections in front, rather than going the full highlight way, to lighten and brighten the area closest to my face.

Has anybody tried this before? I know that the combo can be applied to the entire hair to lighten, but I just want to try it in front. Would I have to tone the results? Since I am trying to avoid reddish tones, is this a mistake?
