As long as you are gentle with it (don't use a ton of hair-sticking products, then rip a brush through it before you wash it which may pull some hair out because of it being stuck together), I don't think using products will make more hair fall out than would otherwise.  Be sure to massage the area once a day to make sure you're getting good circulation in the area (I don't know to what degree that will prevent hair loss, possibly not much, but I've heard it may help, and that's an easy thing to do).

Put a little gel or hairspray in it (you can buy "unscented"), shape it about how you want it, then when its dry brush through it and put a final light coat of hairspray on top.  If you hold the spray about a foot from your head and don't spray too heavily, it should hold and not look wet.  So despite what I just said about ripping a brush through it, that's kind of how you get it to stay without appearing wet.  Just don't use too much gel or spray on the first coat and brushing it after should be okay.

Hi, I'm looking for something that will keep my hair in place but not look like I have something in my hair.  I have gel, but it obviously changes the look of my hair.
I just want to be able to flip up the front of my hair a bit sometimes, since I think this style looks best for me.  It seems like some people don't need gel to do this, but my hair is difficult.  Nothing smelly would be nice.  Also my hair seems to be getting thinner, would putting stuff in it be bad for my hair?
Thanks.
