I usually triple my wefts on the clips, I use machine wefted and I wear 3 rows
and sometimes a single clip piece in the front to hide my fringe.

I haven't tried back combing! I'm going to try it when I get home. Some
days there is no pulling and others there is. I hope that works!
I like the clip-ins too because they're like stars, they come out at night!
(sorry for the cheesy comment. I get so happy thinking about extensions)

What type of weft do you guys use? I'm using the seamless weft with four clips. It has a nice amount of hair so I only need one. How many do you use?

I find when I have not back combed the hair well enough I do get the pulling too.  I often think about switching to a more semi-permanent method for myself, but the clip ins look so good and I like to take them off at night.

Are you backcombing the hair your attaching it to? That really helps it stay
in well and also helps with the pulling. Just backcomb and hairspray your
own hair at the root before you attach the clips.
I know what you mean with the pulling though, I always get that to some
degree with my clip ins. Thats why I only wear them between installs :)

Does anyone have any suggestions for putting clip-on extensions in? I've been wearing my one weft from ear to ear and love it but on some days like today it pulls on some of my hair and makes me want to take it off and throw it out the window.

So if anyone has any tricks, please let me know.
