I've always dyed my hair and extension hair, except the lush hair, which I
ended up eventually using that Color Pulse (a temporary color) to liven it
up. This is the first time I've ever had a problem with coloring. I've drawn
a few conclusions on my own about stuff from this, so this is not my
professional advice, but I sure do dye my hair A LOT!
Like people always say on here, darkening is better than lightening. I've
never tried to lighten my extension hair. I usually buy a light brown or
blonde since I always wear my hair red or darker shades of black/brown.
I would guess that if you are trying to make it slightly darker, it shouldn't
be a problem, probably look for a dye without bleach, I would imagine
that would make the hair turn out crappy.
Otherwise, I've used multiple different types of dyes (had professionals do
it, stuff from Sally's, and a variety of box stuff) and have not felt like it
had damaged or dried out my hair. Then again, for the most part, I use
pretty good quality hair, probably if you use something cheaper, you
might have more problems with it.
Like monsterita said, I would try that first (I always try the less extreme
methods first) for me, it's just not intense enough (again, I try to go from
blonde to dark brown) then if that doesn't work out for you, try a level 2
dye, those just deposit slight color, and they work very nice in my
experience.
As for the purple/greyish, that's what I had with my BSS extension hair, I
can't help you there, I've only bleached my hair blonde a few times, so in
that category, I have no idea.
Maybe this is the time to go see a professional, especially if you have
more expensive hair! If not, take my advice and do a strand test!
I would recommend trying a color enhancing shampoo first, then if that doesn't work, go with a gentle demi-perm color. One of the local salons here sells a brand of shampoo called Procolor that you use once a week or so and it really is nice. Their link is http://www.kenneths.com and click on "products" then "shampoo ->specialty treatment" to see what I'm talking about. It is alot easier on the hair than coloring it. If you're worried about yellow, get the Cool Blonde bottle. I don't know if Sallys sells anything similar.
I used the Copper Elements when my hair was red and it kept the red from fading. The conditioner was especially good.

I have been reading the posts on here about peoples coloring experiences with their extension hair.
I just have a couple of questions about it all as I am preparing for a new install this weekend and am thinking of coloring.
I just ordered a new weft of human hair in #613 which I will be pretipping as soon as it arrives! My natural hair is dyed bleach blonde and matches #613 identically. Sometimes I find that the #613 and my natural hair have a yellowish hue to them, which I am not fond of. So, I often debate about darkening my hair up alittle, to another shade of blonde, just a darker one.
My only problem is when I try to dye my natural hair it often turns a purple or greyish color, my guess from all my bleaching. I was advised to use a filler on my hair before coloring it which brings me to my first question: Can anyone recommend any names of good products for fillers? I have heard of porosity control and that is it? Any others? I will be going to Sally Beauty Supply this weekend.
My next problem will be if i am sucessful in coloring my natural hair, I will then have to darken up the extensions I just purchased. I am leary to do this because the last time I tried to dye my extension hair, I felt it made it really dry. (Now I just used a box dye like clairol, maybe that was the culprit!)
So, I am now wondering if I buy some dye from sally's to do my extension hair will that dry it out, even if I do a deep conditioning treatment following?
And lastly, if I dye my extension hair do I leave it on for the recommended time, longer or less? Does the extension hair take quicker then my natural hair?
