Relatives find couple shot dead in a Southfield home
A husband may have fatally shot his wife then himself Monday following what a relative called a tumultuous marriage, leaving behind two teenage daughters, Southfield police said.
Family members found the couple, whose names have not been released, about 2:30 p.m. Monday in their home on the 27200 block of Devonshire Street near 11 Mile, police said.
The wife, 39, was lying on the bed in one room and her husband, 38, was in another bedroom with a gun near him, police said.
Southfield Police Chief Joseph Thomas said the case is still being investigated, but the incident happened sometime after the girls -- ages 14 and 16 -- left for school in the morning.
Around 8 p.m. Monday, police, neighbors and relatives lingered at the scene.
The Rev. J. H. Porter of Southfield, a pastor at the St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Pontiac, is the woman's uncle. He said that on Sunday his niece gave her husband of 2 1/2 years 30 days to leave because she wanted to separate.
She owned her own hair-braiding and wig business, My Indian Hair on 8 Mile in Southfield, and he worked for Ford Motor Co., Porter said.
When she did not come to work Monday, her sister, who worked for her, called their mother, and the two went to the house and broke in.
The wife had lived there for about 3 years before she married; they each brought one teenager from a previous relationship to the marriage.
"The father has spoken of suicide before. He's talked to family members about this," Thomas said.
