QuoteReplyTopic: Blonde highlights went yellow... Help! Posted: April 19 2006 at 11:48pm
mark, as you may or may not know, there are various stages (levels) your hair goes through when you bleach..
-
Black
Dark Brown
Medium Brown
Light Brown
Dark Blonde
Medium Blonde
Light Blonde
Very Light Blonde
Extra Light Blonde
(Refer to the sticky in the Hair Color forum "Haircoloring Intro to color...")
Sometimes bleaching will require a double process to get it to an extra light blonde (the white color you wanted, which is a lack of all pigment), especially if you have dark hair. Most blondes are a tone rather than a color...so the process is to bleach (and bleach) and then tone (with a violet toner to get the whiter results). The more you process your hair the more damaged it will become, but you can manage it by using a deep conditioner/reconstructor once or more per week and a trim every 6 weeks since split ends happen more often. The nice thing about being a guy is that your hair is short, and if you hate it then you can just shave it off.

I have just got back! After chatting to my stylist I decided that I would go back to my old colour (dark brown) and wait a few weeks before deciding what to do next. I had the bleach put back on and the stylist got my colour back to 100% it was spot on match!! No yellow what so ever now!!
I said to the stylist next time, I was thinking of going completely blonde and she said to do this I will have to have the peroxide put on twice (once to make the hair go an orangy-yellow colour, and then washed off, then a second time to make it go blonde)- Does this sound okay? Will it be okay for the hair and not to damaging?
Also, what is the difference between the above 2 stages and buying one of those do it yourself Blonde kits from Boots.
Thanks!
Mark.

There are many, many shades of blonde! If the salon you go to does a full range of coloring services they will have some sort of swatch book that they use when they do a full double process blonde for clients as opposed to highlights. Yes, the person doing your highlights will leave the peroxide/bleach mixture on your hair for as long as needed for the lightness you want, but you may want some kind of toner added to it as well. Even if they bleach the hair lighter, the lightest it will get is palest yellow (from what I have read here you should never allow your hair to bleach to white as that means it is fried!). If you want a pale yellow result then no further processing will be needed but if you would like a more neutral result a toner will need to be applied. Communicating the blonde color you want will let the colorist know what toner to use.

I don't think they have a sample. I think its if they leave the Peroxide on longer then it will go from Yellow to white.. I am hoping! So I want a colour that is somewhere in between.
Anyway, I have to now wait until Tuesday for my appointment!! So, what I will do, is after I have had it done, I will post back on here to let you know how it turned out!
I can't wait to get rid of this horrible, yellow! Also, I have it on sides and because its too short it looks like horrible yellow dots!
I'll post back on Tueday! :)
Thanks a lot
Mark.

Probably the easiest to do with the most predictible results is option #1. Perhaps ask to see a sample of blonde colors so that you can communicate what you would like the highlighted color to be? Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. Nope, I wanted a light such as white, or more towards the white range than the yellow range (maybe somewhere midway between).
Any more advice, really apreciated.
Thanks

I am male, and have dark brown hair. Yesterday I went to get some Blonde Highlights. I wore the cap, and they pulled the hair through then put on the Peroxide bleach. When they thought it had finished they washed it all off and it looked okay in the Salon.
But when I got home I realised it wasn't okay, and it looked very yellow
So I just went to another hairdresser before and they said it went yellow because they never left the bleach on long enough.. Is this correct?
Anyway, she said I have two options:
1. Get an all over dark colour (to go back to my original) and then re-do the blonde but this time leave it on longer so it goes a whiter blonde.
2. Get the new blonde put in (whiter) so it will mix in with the yellow to make the yellow less noticable, but it will be a lot more head coverage.
I am unsure what to do, but I wouldnt mind option 1.
What are your thoughts on this?
I am a little upset now, because I have to walk around everywhere with yellow bits all in my hair. The yellow is the same as the colour of the smilies on this forum!
