They've got a line that's been extinct for 6 years?!  Which one was this?

I have to say that I've bought from them for a few years now with no problems.  ARTec, Bumble & Bumble, Sebastian, Matrix, Redken...none of these guys smelled or acted funny on my hair.

I have a problem with going to the salon to buy the products I need.  A) I'm a college student, therefore I'm poor *and* lazy ;-), and I get to the salon about twice a year.  I live waaaaay out in the boondocks and it's a pain in the rear to go out of my way and pay more when I can have what I need delivered to my door.  B) While I realize that a "salon consultation" may be helpful, more times than not it doesn't help me a lot.  The stylist will recommend a product that doesn't help, or one that they've run out of...I've actually asked for a product and had the stylist try to talk me out of it! I discovered ARTec on my own and have no qualms about it--I accept full responsiblity if I try something and it doesn't work.  C) I don't go for people like Aveda who will sell their products only in their salons because those salons are even further away from me than my regular one.  They have, in short, lost my money because of lack of accessablity.

Sorry, I don't mean to rant, and you certainly have your points.  I will look twice before I start ordering online (truly an addiction), but for me and my lifestyle, online is just best.

I found the site and checked it out. They are one of the ones that are running it as a "personal shopping service". I am sure that Aveda and Sebastian and the others would love to hear about it.

I can tell you one product line I saw I know for a fact hasn't been made in almost 6 years. So whoever they are getting there products from is selling them some OLD OLD products.

Take it for what its worth. I still say stopping by your salon and getting your products is the only safe and sure way to know what you are getting.

Yes, JCPenney is fine. They are a real salon with no diversion problems that I know of. However, I do remember many many years ago ( we are talking like 1980) buying Nexxus products there that turned out to be fakes) but I don't think they knew they were fakes.

Alexandra,

I do not know of ANY major manufacturer that authorizes any of its retailers to sell on the web. I know that I have contracts that I had to sign with all of my product lines telling me I could NOT sell on the web. Now by major manufacturers I mean Sebastian, Aveda, Paul Mitchell, Matrix, etc. There are lines you can get anywhere by manufacturers such as Clairol, Wella, L'Oreal etc but those are not salon lines.

The manufacturer's are very strict about this and state that the products are only to be sold in our salons, after a consultation. WE cannot go to the flea market or anywhere else outside our salon and sell the products. There are some WEB E-tailers that make you sign up as a salon client (which you can't be a salon client if you have never been to the salon) and then ship to you. This is just one of those ways that they try to pretend to be legal.

Once again, there is NO salon product line that I know of that allows sales on the internet.

I will check out WWBS and see what I think.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for the info on what to watch out for. I will only buy from salons from now on.

Just to be sure, it is o.k. to buy ARTec at the JC Penny salon? I want to be sure because that's the only place I can find it.

Thanks,
Happyblonde

Hey, Randy,

About the web, I buy many of my salon products at the World Wide Beauty Store, which says that it is licensed to sell salon products.  I've bought countless items from them and have yet to have any trouble.  (For that matter, Karen used to recommend the WWBS, although I don't know her opinion now.)  I've also bought from other stores (deleted from my favorites since I usually only use WWBS now, sorry I can't give you names) with no trouble.  And I haven't had any trouble with cosmetics, either.

Have I been lucky, or what?  LOL.  I do agree with you that it's best to be careful.  I wouldn't buy "salon" products in Wal-Mart--I've heard too many horror stories.  Plus, you know something's fishy if you're getting it for *that* good of a price.

What's your opinion of WWBS?

ok here goes. Hope this isn't too long winded.

There are people out there that purchase professional products and divert them to drug stores, department stores, discount stores and web site stores. Sebastian recently caught one of the diverters when he purchased a huge load of counterfeit products. These products are usually old, (as in several years old. I once saw Products on Eckerd's shelves that had not been produced in 7 years.) counterfeit (as in the company didn't really make them, they aren't real, they purchased bottles from the bottle makers or made bottles that look just like the real thing and fill it with whatever they feel like) or contaminated (sometimes a product line is recalled. These products are supposed to be destroyed but sometimes the companies in charge of destroying them sell them instead.)

As far as web sites are concerned, I know that I have found products on the web in outdated packaging, products that haven't been made in years that are all being touted as new, current products. (ALOT OF COSMETICS ARE THIS WAY)

Professional products are only guaranteed to be real, authentic products when you purchase them from a real, authentic salon. Sebastian, Aveda, Matrix, Paul Mitchell, etc do not authorize ANYONE to sell their products over the WEB, in grocery stores, drug stores, etc. If it does not come from a salon, you should not buy it. You are only perpetuating the diversion of these products.

By the way, if your drug store is selling you conterfeit or outdated or stolen hair care products, what makes you think they won't do the same with prescription drugs???

Now, I should say that this does not mean that the salons inside JC Penney, etc are not real, they are. But to buy professional products at IGA or Albertson's grocery stores, etc is not wise. You may not even be purchasing the product you think you are and the product you are using may actually do more harm than good.

Regarding the comment about not buying salon products anywhere except the salon...

I've bought salon products on the web at several different places and have yet to be gypped.  The only difference is that my hair looks nicer and my pocket book isn't so hardly hit.  Has anyone had any negative experiences with this (buying a product online that's gone bad, etc.?)

Why shouldn't you buy products in a department store?

How do the products wind up at stores other than salons?
If some are old, doesn't this imply that maybe the same company who produces this product sells the secondary products to stores? I really would like to know because I can find some products like Goldwell at my local grocery store. This is regional grocery store, not a local store, so I thought that was O.K.

The products will be fine. The smell that you are more than likely smelling is FLAX. Flax is a VERY strong smelling botanical smelling very much like rubbing alcohol. It is perfectly fine. As far as the length of time the products are sitting on the shelf. They are surprizingly low, anything that you get at a reputable salon will be fine for at least a year if not two after you purchase it.

Just a reminder never purchase salon products from any drugstore, department store, discount store or website. These products are more than likely old, damaged, contaminated or counterfeit.

I thought so too.But how long does Aveda or whatever brand keeps them on the shelf for sale.I noticed that my aloe/flax strong hold gel had a really strong alcohol smell and it is fiddicult to spread it on my hair. When I first bought it the geranium fragnance was very faint.Maybe when I bought it it was already a tear old?I guess I should ask aveda this.

Your professional products (sebastian, Aveda, Paul Mitchell, etc) will last at least 2 years. Now, don't think you can have them in a sunny window with an open top for that long, but in a bathroom cupboard, no problem. As for the body shop products, I have no idea.
