I personally am not a fan of the store bought stuff either, you just don't get the same results.  I guess what I'll try is the Shades EQ 03N (Espresso) with the 05N (Walnut), which will give me a level 04N and hopefully match what I'm looking for (which is the 40 Espresso from Féria).  Thank you for your help, without it I would've probably bought the 03N thinking it was the same color and get once again a color I did not want.  I really appreciate it.

Espresso is not a specific color those are just names given to a haircolor line. They could be totally different it's best to match the swatches together from Shades EQ & Feria. Personally I wouldn't use the boxed stuff.

Before coloring, my hair had about a 3" growth.  My natural hair color is around a number 4 (medium brown) and the rest of my hair was colored a level 6.  I asked the hairstylist for a number 5.  Since everything I put in my hair turns out reddish I read in the forum that I should use a green based ash color, which is what the stylist used.  She mixed the level 4AG with the level 6AG to make the 5 I wanted.  Funny thing was, she only dyed my roots and the final result came out the same color as the rest of my hair (a level 6).  It was a matter of miscommunication and I don't blame her because I should've said something.  But I figured she was going to use a toner to darken the color later.

Now, I want to darken the haircolor.  I really like the color Espresso from Féria, but I wish to use the Shades EQ line from Redken, because I've heard great things about it.  What I noticed though, is that the number for the Espresso from Féria is 40, and the number for the Espresso from Shades EQ is 03.  Does this mean the Shades EQ color is darker?  Or are the numbers simply different and I would get the same result?  In other words, what is the equivalent Shades EQ color for the Féria Espresso?

Thank you in advance.

Now of course, I want to tone it so it's a bit darker than what I have now.  I am thinking of using the Redken Shades EQ, and I'm looking for a level 4 in a cool tone (which they don't have).  I was at the store and I saw a color I liked, which is Espresso from Féria by L'Oréal.  Weirdly enough, the number they have on the box is 40, when I went to check if Redken had something similar, it did.  The color is Espresso, however the number is 03N, translating , I'm guessing that would be a 30 for the Féria line?

My point being, are the colors the same and all that changes are the numbers, or is the Redken color actually darker?

I'd really appreciate some enlightment, I'm pretty upset, given I spent $50 for a color I didn't want.

You need to be a little more informative with what you've done to your hair so I can better try to help you. What is your natural color, what color have you put on your hair? what brands of haircoloring have you put in your hair?what color are you trying to achieve? Lighter or Darker?

As a HairStylist I only use professional color but I can tell you boxed color is done differently. Many boxed haircolor like Feria contain Metallic Salts which is not something I'd recommend putting in your hair. To sum it up I would never suggest using boxed color on your own hair. Typically when you see numbers like 30 & 40 on something like Redken Color Fusion those are the developers of varying strength which depending on how many levels lighter you are going you would use.

First off NEVER! NEVER EVER put color over previously colored hair...it will not lift the artificial pigment from the previously colored hair. Once you color your hair the only thing that lightens it is bleach with 20 volume for on the scalp and 30 volume for off the scalp. Never mix bleach with 40 volume or you could risk serious chemical burns to your scalp and severe hair damage.

With color fusions 5 is the level (dark to light...1 being the darkest and 10 being the lightest) The AG is the tone and AG stands for Ash/Green it is more of a controlling color used to primarily cut red and brassy red out of the hair and make it more appealing to the eyes. It is used primarily as a controlling tone.

I don't want to go into detail because there's alot more to it....if you don't understand haircoloring then you can read more about it at this link it's my introduction to haircoloring to better help people llike yourself avoid disaster when attempting to color their own hair.
