Thinning Shears versus Layering: Which is Better?

Thinning adds what are reffered to as internal layers. Good foe styling options and removing extra weight. But if done correctly you will still have a blunt cut look. Layers are done with shorter hair blending to longer in varying extremes depending upon the finished look intended.So yes there is a big difference.

This isn't a professional explanation, but I have had both done to my hair.


I have a shoulder length bob (it was chin but is growing out) and had the top of my head thinned for height - my hair is thick but straight.  I am able to keep the look of one length and have the benefits of layering as far as weight reduction on the hair.  Layering on my hair works out great if I want to roll it all the time, or perm, but on my hair when I wear it straight it looks too thin at the ends.

A few months ago, I had my hair cut shorter than I ever had it before. It was about chin length until my stylist went through my hair with thinning shears. It really lightened the weight, but I would like to know if there is a difference between the final look of hair that has been thinned or hair that has been layered. Also are there any advantages or disadvantages with either?
