Thank you for answering my post...I really needed the advice and input.  I would never want to lose my hair.  It's a good thing I didn't go ahead with the perm!  And now I've decided to go natural.  So ladies, wish me luck, patience, and commitment as I embark on my transition to my natural hair.

If you try to put a curly perm over your relaxed hair, it will surely fall out.  If your hair is naturally curly, then why not just transition to your natural hair and skip all the damage.

If you want a curly perm you will have to cut all of your relaxed hair off because you can't put a curly perm over a relaxer.  If you do this you will get severe breakage!

I just cut of my locs in Dec 05 because I was after the same look so I did
the wave neuveau but I then learned u must have 100% natural hair for
this look in the pictures. Then do a braid-out which is adding a little oil to
the hair while wet and braid it letting it out in the morning. The WN is a
chemical it gives u a dry curl which I do like, once you have it put in you
just put the lotion in and let dry not greasy shake and go great for the
  summer

p.s. this is pertaining to the second picture in your post

Well I do know that you can not perm (curly perm) you hair if it has a relaxer still in it..You will have to cut all the relaxed hair out so that you'll be natural and then perm. IMO I would go to a licensed cosmetologist/stylist that does perms and get a consulation and to get all the info needed so that you know the pros and cons of having a curly perm. Sorry that I can't be of more help..Ohh another way thats temp. is to have your hair rodded to get the curl effect BUT that does not last long as a perm would. HTH

I'm african-american and I have naturally curly hair--probably cross between a 3c and 4a.  I have long hair...when straightened it reaches to my shoulder blades but currently my hair is relaxed with about six inches of new growth.  Right now I am seriously considering a curly perm because I would like to have spiral curls like this:

or this:

The problem is, since my hair is partially relaxed and partially natural, I'm not too sure how it will react.  I am hoping that it won't end in a devastating mess of frizz and breakage.  I am PRAYING that it won't end in me having to cut off 16 years worth of hair growth.  Also, would like some insight on what type of treatment to get--if it is recommended at all.  Can I get some testimonials from other african-americans who have gotten curly perms and how it turned out for ya'll?

Thanks,

Andi.
