Heat in any form helps conditioners and proteins bond to your hair better. It isn`t necessary but will help. Personally I prefer non-direct heat with a heating cap.
And yes, any benefit the protein provides is washed right down the drain with the water. Unfortunately, hair is dead as a doornail from the moment it emerges from your scalp. Protein reconstructors only serve to coat the hair shaft, making it less vulnerable to damage. The effect is only temporary. I hope this helps!

I recently bought a bottle of "Liquid Hair" Restructurizer. The product is supposed to fill in the protien gaps in your hair and make it stronger. According to the directions, they recommend you spray your towel-damp hair with it and then blowdry to 80% dry to activate the keratin. I am wondering if you must blow dry your hair for the product to work properly? And, if you wash your hair, does it wash out the protien bonds as well?
My hair is almost to my knees (~50") and continues to grow longer. Rather slowly these days, but that's ok - it's still *growing*.
