Hi Kelly:
You are probably asking for trouble if you try to achieve your desired red color at home. First of all you have to know that "tint will not lighten tint" so the mahogany red that is already in your hair will not come out by applying a lighter shade of tint over it. You will need to have corrective color done. This is usually something that must be done professionally. It can be very damaging and a trained colorist can monitor the damage and color results. This is especially true if your new growth is virgin and not colored at all. To be truthful I would not even try this at home you may do more damage to your hair that need be. Call you local beauty salons and get prices. Some salons or even beauty schools will be reasonably priced.
Good luck Forest

I would like to go to a light auburn shade but can only afford to do it at home right now. I don't have virgin hair, right now it has a mahogany shade on it and I think it's just too dark. I have had red hair before (my natural color is light brown with red highlights, which I haven't seen in 12 years!!!).
My skin is pale - fair, really - and I have green, sometimes hazel-looking eyes. I have some light freckles. I just think a light auburn would compliment my skin tone and eye color.
I am tired of fretting over it - I'm ready to do it! Any suggestions?
