Ahhhh....80s hair. i too was one of the "big haired chicks". I had waist length layered hair -- permed, with bangs. I would pull my hair up in sections, spray it, and curl it on hot rollers. the hair was curled under and the end result was 3 rings of rollers around my head - stacked like halos. (yea right -- halos??). My bangs were curled with two different sized curling irons, teased and sprayed. I sprayed my hair while it was on the rollers. More volume needed, of course. When the curlers were completely cooled and I was dressed the curlers would come out. As each section was taken down the roots were teased with a rattail comb, and the rest was teased with a pick -- and sprayed. Then the next layer was done. When all layers were done, there was a tri-mirror meeting of the views to make sure all sides were curled -- with no "holes". Finally, adding insult to injury.... The sides were pulled out and sprayed, then held with a round brush and blowdried until dry. One last layer of spray.

Aqua Net was the best. Rave came second. You were pretty much guaranteed in every bathroom there was atleast one girl with a can of Aquanet -- be it purple or blue was irrelevant -- that you could bum some spray off of to hold the mass of hair until the end of the school day.

My hair was huge, and looked like a lion`s mane of curls cascading down my back. It took me an hour to get my hair done every morning. My sister was the queen of the curling iron. She would curl, spray while on the iron, then uncurl part way and spray again. Her hair was teased straight up with the bangs all curled forward and the sides were pulled out and curled forward also.

Oh and washing that mess out.... take a BATH and lay in the tub to give the water a chance to start breaking down all of that spray. Work in shampoo and baking soda to get all the buildup out. repeat. repeat. repeat. then condition like crazy because the next day was going to be a repeat of the same.

Oh, my gosh, I`d almost forgotten about the "wings" on all of the foreheads, ha ha!
In high school in New Mexico, 1980, for some reason, the girls would comb bangs straight up in the air with GOBS of hair spray, while the others would curl the bangs under but they would stick out a foot from one`s face. It was hilarious! What I think I hated the most was the girls with long hair but extremely short bangs which were curled to death and then sprayed with a mass of
chemicals. A big stiff sticky thing sticking out of their foreheads.
What a hoot!

Hi,

Well in Texas big hair is always in. Yes, in 1989 hair was huge and I think it was pretty much all over the country. Of course it is getting big again with the revival of Charlie`s Angels which was the original "wings" start. Lets not forget the B52s and their giant hair hoods.

Best wishes,
Karen

Well....I actually graduated from High School in 1989! Yes it was big. But there were other interesting trends. I leaned towards the punk style. My hair was dyed like 5 different colors in about 1 years time. In my yearbook picture my hair is short to my ears and dyed black...oh I musn`t forget the really tall bangs I wore sticking up on one side. Yeah...I`m really fond of that being my graduation picture (NOT- ha). Another style I HATED was the wings on the side, permed in the back look, GAG. It just didn`t flow...straight on the side and the back left wet to dry wavy!! I never wore that one! ... Oh the memories!

was going through my aunts 1989 year book and could not believe the
size of the hairstyles that all
the girls wore!! In alot of cases some girls hair was cut out of the pictures
because they were so big
and high! She said EVERYBODY had big hair in the late 80s and said that
she`d go through a
WHOLE can of hairspray every few days!
Is this true or was it only a New York kind of thing? I mean some girls
bangs were like 6` high and
huge and poofy. Did any one here do that to their hair? What does it feel
like to have a 1/2 can of
hairspray on at once!?!
