QuoteReplyTopic: Volumizing products for colored hair? Posted: December 30 2000 at 3:13am
Thank you very much Karen for such a detailed reply. I will keep in mind the products you mentioned and hopefully try some of them soon, particularly the Matrix root volumizer. Hopefully more people with knowledge on this topic will offer some advice... I am sure others have the same problem with their colored hair. Thanks again!
Your stylist is correct. Most, if not all, volume products will cause haircolor to fade faster because yes they do expand the cuticle.
Matrix Amplify will definitely fatten hair. My T&S business partner uses it with incredible results. I would probably have to do something drastic to get him to stop using it and he is a guy that doesn`t believe in spending lots of money on hair care. However, he would pay just about anything for his Matrix Amplify shampoo and gel.
Paul Penders has a volume enhancing product that is all natural and it is my understanding that it does not impact hair color at all. I can promise that I will write to him and ask him for absolute clarification. I also heard that the Aubrey products will not impact hair color in any way. However, I am not positive and I will write to my Aubrey rep and ask her too.
In the meantime, Aveda`s Blue Malva used to "fatten" my T&S business partner`s hair...not enough for his liking...but it did help better than previous products. He also used Aveda`s Confixer product and it did help a little.
You can get more volume if you do a final rinse with cool water/cold water (I hate that but it works) and you use a good root volumizer which would have less impact on the color.
Matrix has a good root volumizer. My business partner loves the gel but not the root volumizer because of the way he wears his hair. I used the root volumizer on my bangs and that stuff works well for root life.
Edwin Paul recently told me personally that his Classic Shampoo, which is supposed to help fatten the hair cuticle, as well as remove gunk, will not harm color. He did tell me that you must always use a rinse-out conditioner with the shampoo to balance but he said that his daily conditioner will not flatten fine hair and will maintain the cuticle expansion.
He also said that his volume mist will help. A friend of mine recently tried the Edwin Paul mist on her fine hair and she said it worked great. She also tried the volume gel and did not like it as well. Neither did my business partner. However, I have another HB.com volunteer with thicker fine hair and she swears by the Edwin Paul volume gel. Go figure. Different hair - different products work differently.
The advantage my business partner has is that his hair is not color treated. I will tell you though, his hair is so fine that is looks like little feathers and after the Matrix it is awesome. Again, it is unfortunate but this does not work well for color treated hair like I have and you have.
I will ask if any color experts are reading this post that they make suggestions.
Thanks for a great topic. It is a topic that needs some answers since it is a very good question.
Best wishes & Happy New Year. Karen

I have color-treated hair, but would like more volume. I found out from my stylist awhile ago that volumizing products can cause haircolor to fade because they expand the cuticle, so I stopped using my Back to Basics Wild Berry, which I really liked. Are there any shampoos or conditioners out there that give more volume/body but are safe for color-treated hair? I currently use Matrix Logics Colorserve shampoo, and alternate Back to Basics Green Tea and ARTec Color Depositing Moisturizing conditioners.
