Nevermind..
I KNEW I read somewhere where someone explained WHY this worked.. I
finally found it tonight.. Thought it would be good to add this to this
post..
When a base, such as bleach is
applied to hair, it causes the cuticles to close or flatten. This is
the reason if you are having problems with tangles due to damaged
cuticles, the bleach bath will help.
Acid washes can also cause the cuticles to flatten. That is why
some women will do a final rinse with a diluted vinager solution, for
it will give them shiny smooth hair.
It all depends on what the ph is of the solution that is applied
to the hair, and the lenght of time it is allowed to remain.

You got it perfect...right down to the last detail! Good job girl!
You can alter the amount of bleach and ammonia to a smaller ratio,
although the measurements you have given work the best. Even a cap full
of bleach diluted in water will make a difference regarding tangles.
The small amount of bleach (clorox) you are using will not lighten the
hair color. The treatment doesn't last forever, but it can really help.
It's about time you jumped in this thread girl.. Now I know it works,
but I need the WHY.. and I know you told me once the explanation of
WHY this works.. could you share that here.. It would make this thread
complete!

If the hair changes color you've left the hair in the bleach bath too long. But Your right poose about it being able to change the haircolor.Although the hair would be trash after lifting with household bleach.

i want to know more baout this and why it works... now clorox is not hair bleach but would it not lighten the hair or strip some color? those seem like harsh chemicals to use to. i have had people come to me with tangled hair but i dont know what they would do if they saw me coming at them with bleach and amonia...lol all i know is when i was 18 in my first apartment i mixed them in the toliet- i did not know better and well....
it was bad. i did not passs out put i took my dog to my parents for the night when i left the windows open lol
Bleach baths were mentioned once on HE101, and I recall
that the subject was touched upon here too. There is a GREAT thread
from BHM which details the steps, but I thought I
should post the full instructions here as well.. This is courtesy of
the lovely and talented ladies on BHM.. You can read the original post as well:

I hope Mokipono will jump in here and explain exactly WHY this works.
(she's the FIRST person to tell me about bleach baths) All I know is
that it is supposed to help make the cuticles lie flat, so the hair
doesn't tangle anymore.
Practice first on hair you don't care about so you can get the steps
down pat. The process will not lighten the hair. Some ladies have
reported that on some curly textures that the curls will drop a little.
Enjoy!!!

Professional Detangling Process for Human Hair Replacement Systems
WARNING: The following process is identical to the one commonly used by
professionals in the hair replacement industry for detangling most
human hair systems.
Although it is a relatively simple process, if executed improperly, may result in permanent damage to your hair system.
You Will Need:
Large sink with access to hot water
At least 2 gallons of hot tap water
2 oz. of Clorox™ bleach
(or any other brand of pure CHLORINE bleach)
2 oz. of regular household ammonia
Wide tooth comb or brush (Vent Brush)
Instructions:
Step 1: Setup for Clorox™ Scrub
Draw one gallon of VERY hot tap water into the sink. Next, pour the 2
oz. of Clorox™ bleach into the sink with the hot tap water.
Finally, place the tangled hair into the water carefully and begin the next step promptly.
CAUTION: DO NOT allow the hair to be in contact with the Clorox™ & hot water mixture for more than 2 mintures!
Step 2: Clorox™ Tangle Scrub
Using the wide tooth comb or vent brush, gently brush through the
hair from top to bottom. Concentrate on the most tangled and knotted
area of the hair.
The tangles should come out while brushing and the hair will become
silky. Be careful NOT to brush more than 2 minutes while the hair
system is in the Clorox™ mixture.
Step 3: Rinse Hair System
Drain the Clorox™ and hot water from the sink. Then begin to
thoroughly rinse warm water through the hair system. While rinsing,
keep the weft of the hair facing up. This will prevent the hair from
inverting and tangling again.
Step 4: Ammonia Scrub
(Ladies,
please be sure to rinse out all of the Clorox bleach before you begin
the ammonia step - If bleach and and ammonia mix, they give off toxic
fumes that can make you pass out or cause possibly fatal results.)
Draw another gallon of VERY hot tap water into the sink. Pour the 2 oz.
of ammonia into the sink with the hot tap water. Place hair in sink.
Start brushing the hair system again, same as before. Use a wide tooth or vent brush and gently comb hair for 1-2 minutes.
Step 5: Final Rinse
Drain the ammonia and hot water from the sink. Then begin to
thoroughly rinse warm water through the hair system again. Remember,
while rinsing keep the weft of the hair facing up.
After the final rinse, your hair should be silky smooth and tangle free.
