If you are going to light brown, there is no need to bleach it all the way to blonde though. You can bleach it until it is like a red-orange color and then just color brown over that. Because if you bleach all the way to blonde, you will first have to dye it red before you go brown. (red is the filler color between blonde and brown)

Use Color Fix prior to bleaching if you can.

I too am in the process of lifting black to a light brown. I tried to use Feria High Lift, which is used to lift naturaly dark hair to a lighter brown color. It worked a little, but the parts of my hair where the black really stuck weren't lifted. So in order to get black out you have to bleach and since you are going light brown it should work pretty well. Use a bleaching kit to lift all the color out, you may have patches of orangey/yellow color (usually where the black color really STUCK) and then use the brown you want over top. Since it's brown it should work out pretty good. It may appear DARKER too, since your hair will be lifted to a blonde color.

I use OTC hair colors... When I dyed my hair blonde, I bleached out the dark and then applied ASH blonde to counter the orangey color. It worked good.
I am unable to get anything from a shop that sells Salon dyes  so I am forced to use OTC.
OTC is kind of a trial by error thing since they don't exactly tell you what base they use.

Oh and yes Strand test most def. But if you can get stuff at a SALLY's... Totally go for that, it's a safer route and it also will result in much better results... not like OTC. That's a gamble.

I think when you said "I've dyed my hair back" you meant "I've dyed my hair black"?  If so, you cannot lift color with color, so you won't be able to just dye it back to light brown.  (If you've dyed your hair a color besides black, that may change things).

Unfortunately, if you did go black, that's going to be really tough to get rid of.  You can try a color remover like ColorFix, which you can get at a beauty supply shop, but I have to warn you it doesn't always work on black.  It is low in peroxide and is at least safer than bleach.  It will turn your hair either orange or yellow if it works (if it doesn't work it'll stay black), then you will be ready to dye over it once you've colorfixed it all one color.  If you wind up with yellow, you'll need a brown dye with a violet base, if you wind up orange, you'll need a brown dye with a green base (you can see bases written on dyes at the beauty supply shop, I wouldn't recommend box color from the drug store because you don't know what the base is and it might come out funny colors.  Be sure to test strand everything before doing your whole head to avoid any mistakes before they happen (which are harder to fix).  Even test stranding the colorfix is a good idea, because then you'll know before you'll do it if it will work and how many times you may need to do it.  And you need to test strand the brown dye not only because you need to check for funky colors, but because you want to make sure its not going to oxidize back to black with the peroxide (sometimes that happens).

My original hair color would be decribed as, at least by Clairol Natural Instincts, Suede or Light Brown.

I've dyed my hair back and I'm planning on going back to the original hair color. I don't want a color stripper, I just want to dye it back.

To my understanding this you have to start with a clean(bleach blonde) slate. Then dye it the color you want.

I can't find anything in any in the instructions for the hair dye I normally use(Clairol Nice' n Easy - Permanant Dye) or in the color I want to have(Clairol Natural Instincts - A Demi-permanant Dye)

I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong, therefor I'm asking for everyone's help.
