doing in your roots yourself DOES result in diffrent shades, going
blonde and doing it yourself is always a gamble... but like i say, hair
grow back. :)

Thank you both so much for your replies! I've decided that I'm going to go to a salon to get it dyed blonde first BUT I'm thinking I might try your techniques to do touch-ups sometimes? I dunno, maybe that'd be a bad idea since they'd be two totally different brands and shades... I *really* wanted to try it myself first but I'm pretty afraid that I'll screw it up... and I know that can be fixed, but if I really damage it in the process of trying to go blonde, that could turn out pretty bad after having to get it fixed, too.
If either of you have any suggestions regarding me doing my own roots myself (using the way you do it), please let me know! It sure would help me out if I was able to save a little money on touch-ups. My hair grows really fast so I'm sure I'd have to go in to have them done at least once every 5 weeks!

Ah that's why they say to do that! It's a good thing your here!
My bleach got dry and crusty, but it still worked. If I left it in longer I would have lifted my hair more...
the instuctions on these hair dyes.. the garnier bleach kits, says NOT
TO APPLY HEAT, so I wouldnt' so that if you want to try to get your
hair lighter. They probably say that for a reason.

The roots lighten faster than the ends because of the heat from the scalp makes the bleach warmer. The warmer the bleach the faster the reaction. Hence you get what's known as HOT ROOTS when the roots are lighter than the ends. Just a chemical reaction that is increased by heat.
I believe that you can get the same results as a salon. Just make sure you coat the hair evenly, don't let the bleach become dry and crusty, use 20 vol peroxide, and reapply after 90 mins. Don't overlap! Also, make sure you use a nice toner when you get finished.
Good luck!
Rebekah
PS I've seen some very nice results from folks who do it themselves.

Hey! My hair isn't virgin, it's been processed and processed so it would most likely be easier for you to get your hair blonde.
You can see your hair changing color when you apply the bleach, if you
don't want it too light then watch it carefully. I only left mine in
for about 20 mins or so....
I used Granier 100% Super Brillant Blonding, is what it's called. It is
probably just a shade Lighter than the kit you got, which would work
just as well I would assume.
Do your ends FIRST. I finally learned this... and then do your roots.
For some reason (cause I'm no hairdresser) they lighten faster than
yoru ends.
Do what it says on the instructions... it mentions this.
If you get a reddy/orangy tone (which you may, because these kits don't
come with toner.) use a PURPLE shampoo for blondes (you can get it at
your local hairdresser) and or use an ASH color over top of the bleach.
This will help a little...
Bleaching merely strips the color free. ASH helps tone because it has
purple tones in the dye. Same with the shampoo... I use So Silver.
My hair still has a yellow/orangy tone, but not as bad as it used it. I
always have this trouble, my roots always turn out reddy...
I will say, you most likely will not get the same results as you would
if you went to a salon. If you do plan on bleaching, I warn you of
that.
It may be redder than you want it to be. My hair is not virgin hair so
I do have some places that are lighter and darker, but you don't notice
unless I actually point it out.
And also once you do this you can dye your hair back to brown, try to
find something in the ashy color... like an ash brown or something...
Also once you do this, a hairdresser if you go to afterwards will be
VERY upset you did it, so don't be too shocked if they treat you like
an idiot...
You can also go in to a hairdresser and get a toner shampoo put in.. it
cost like 20-30 dollars, and again they may look, down on you a little,
but don't let that get to you...
I'm just warning you. I'm not too scared of ruining my hair so if you
are and you can't bare to live with a mistake I wouldn't risk it...
other than that, try it and see what happens. if all else fails dye it back to brown...
I hope this helps a little.

I have some questions for you! After I saw your pictures of your new blonde hair, I went out and bought a box of 100% Color Bleach Blonding. Is that what you used? I noticed that you called it "Extra Bleaching." Are they the same? Anyway... my current color is an already-colored medium brown shade, so it's considerably lighter than black! I was thinking of attemping what you did, but I'm understandably a little scared! Here are my questions:
When it comes to bleaching, how do you know when you should stop the processing? Is it easy to see the color as it's processing?
After you bleach, should you use a toner? If so, which one?
I'm really unsure as to the actual "procedure" for bleaching hair. Does one start at the length and ends of the hair, let that sit for a while, and then do the roots? Or do you do the roots first and let that sit? OR do you just apply to your whole head all at once?
If I were to attempt the whole bleaching thing and had... unsatisfactory results (in other words, I look like Ronald McDonald), would I be able to just dye over it with a brown color? It seems like I remember reading online somewhere that once hair has been bleached, all the red has been taken out and you have to put red back IN before you can get it darker again. ?
So sorry for all of these questions but your results are awesome and I don't even wanna attempt this unless I get more educated. I guess if I know this little to begin with, maybe that should tell me something...
