There has been a lot in the press recently regarding GHDs and the way that they just "blow up".

GHD have said that it is the very early range of GHD straighteners that they made that had a production problem which meant that they could overheat and explode. They assure that the newer batch of straighteners no longer have this problem, but I'm still quite scared when I use mine!

A word of warning for people with GHDs!

I used to be the kind of person (probably like many others) who after straightening my hair I would turn the straighteners off but not unplug them from the wall. This is not enough as electricity still flows into the straightener's circuits and there have been reports of people's straighteners exploding even when turned off (but left in at the socket). This is extremely dangerous as you can imagine, especially if you're not in the house if it happens.

All irons get product build up. God knows mine does, but it has never shorted out. Ghd are known to do that. Don't get me wrong, they do a decent job, they just don't last that long.

don't worry it is just product build up on the iron - clean them using a cloth

Get a different iron. GHD has a reputation of doing that and of falling apart. I don't know if the new ones do, but the tha last few I saw had no tempererature control. Sedu or Solia, those things rock! I've had my Sedu for 2 years 4 months now, and it is going strong as the first day I got it.

My old straighteners did exactly the same thing, however im i straightening freak and wouldnt leave the house without straightening my hair, so put it the noise to one side and carried on. You prob dont wanna hear the next bit, but im telling you so you dont get in the same mess. After a few uses everything seemed normal, but one morning i was straightening my hair and there was a huge bang and from the corner of my eye i saw a spark!! I immediatly put them down and rushed to the mirror and sure enough i had this handful of black burned frizzled hair, so i had to cut it out! Turned out the fuse in the wire had brocken which caused the sizzling noise and ended up breaking my pride and joy Cry lol! I believe this can be fixed by the manufacturer, but failing that it might be best to either go without them or buy i new pair.
 Good luck! Smile

Those straightners as well as the Chi ones have a tendency to do that. They just short out after a while. I guess is a manufacturing defect. I would start looking for a new iron. It won't be long until it does it again. Don't take any chances.

Ive just heard people having these and after a while they can blow up or cause fires, I had my grandad n bf look at them and they undid them to see what the problem was, thinking something inside blew, they've done something to them, I tried them again and they worked better than before, I had a wire problem that made the little red light flicker on and off, maybe sommet came loose, they are working ok and havent made any noise anymore, My hair was dry, Im gonna just keep my eye on them and if i notice anything i'll have to get a new pair.
Hopfully they will be ok!

Was the smell the ceramic heating up? I do not have a GHD but my flat iron is ceramic and smells weird when it gets hot. Was your hair dry or wet when you were ironing it? If it was wet it would be the water on the hot surface. If it was dry then something is probably wrong. Plug it back up and see if it starts doing it again but BE CAREFUL since you said they have blown up if may spark or something. I hope this heped some.
