You know, that's messed up.  A DUI shouldn't prevent someone from crossing borders, especially if they've already paid their debt to society.

I can understand keeping out murderers and rapists, but really, this is just getting plain stupid.

Shouldn't these rules be to protect us from terrorists?  Islamic fundamentalists don't drink alcohol.  It's forbidden.  So, a DUI should pretty much mean someone is NOT a terrorist!

i lived in canada for 5 years! i love it there and think about moving back. k about crossing if u have a dwi dui or an arrest which is a felony forget about it. they ask you questions and sometimes will pull u into immagrations. they can keep u there for 24 hrs if thet choose- no lawyer or phone call- it is another country and if they dont want u they dont have to take u..lol i hope your son gets through ok- oh and coming back is the same way- 911 changed everything! it used to be different!

My husband and I tried to get through once from Anchorage, Alaska to the Canadian border, 1 (stufffed with crap) 1995 Ford Exploder, 2 people, 5 cats (you can imagine the smell!) We drove for 2 1/2 days only sleeping in the car one night due to constuction (!).
Made it alllllllllllllllllllllllllllll the way to the border. They wouldn't let me husband in 'cause he was arrested in 1996. (We had to drive all the way back and ship my damn SUV to the "states", and take a damn jet)
And now, if he wants to go back to Canada, he has to wait 5 years from that date then REAPPLY to be admitted.
So, they won't let you in def. if you have a DUI or crap, sometime they just don't check people and let 'em go in.
Hope he made it ok!

I wish I could help. Hope everything turned out ok.

I do know in January, it's getting even stricter to go in or out of the U.S. Passports will now be needed when they previously weren't.

I have heard of the US-Canada border getting more difficult to pass through.

I hope your son got through OK.  Sorry I don't have any connections.
