Hi Kelli,

Sorry to hear you`ve been experiencing split ends.

Yes, split ends cannot be healed, they must be trimmed off.

The solution starts with a self-assessment on your hair care regimen. If you`re not doing so already (and since I don`t know your routine), you may want to consider the following:

* eat a healthy diet and get regular cardiovascular exercise.

* detangle your hair before you wash it. Dilute your shampoo (use a separate bottle) and apply it with this bottle directly to the scalp. Work the diluted shampoo mixture around with the pads of your fingertips. Usually this is all the shampoo you`ll want to use, but occasionally will you want to apply some additional shampoo to the length of your hair.

* detangle wet or dry hair with a wide-toothed comb, starting at the tips and gradually working your way up to your scalp. Click the link below for an article I wrote for the Hair Boutique about detangling wet hair.

* never brush wet hair

* air-dry your hair. If you must blow-dry, use the lowest temperature possible (no heat if available), and turn off the dryer before your hair is completely dry.

* periodically use a deep-conditioner (post-shampoo) and warm oil treatments (pre-shampoo)

* avoid heating elements (curling or straightening irons) and the use of chemicals (dyes and permanents). Over time, these processes make your hair weaker and more brittle.

These are the basics (at least those that I can think of now!). Hope this helps!

A lof of of things contribute to split ends -- from sleeping, to clothing, to how you wash, comb and style your hair.

I discovered that one thing I was doing was not removing jewelry when i washed my hair and running my hands thru my hair when stressed at work (I do corporated dsl tech support by phone). The edges on my rings and my diamond cut on my wedding band was actually cutting my hair. :)

How long is your hair when they start to occur? Sorry, but some people just can`t grow long healthy hair and should stay short. IMO there is nothing worse than unhealthy hair - no matter the length.
