After my horrible multi-color highlighting experience and it fading away so quickly, I decided to go to the Aveda salon and they did a nice, rich, dark brown.  I'm like you, very dark brown (used to be blue/black, now it's almost black).  I was too afraid to pick out a color and do it at home myself, especially as I had to cover 4 different shades of highlights.  Please let us know how it turns out.

Well, since your hair is naturally almost black. U could actually use a dye instead of bleach, but I'd be careful.I'd try what Julie says. She's right.Loreal brunette has very pretty browns to pick from. The color u want is actually my natural hair color.I like black hair though.I use to dye mine black. Now it's blonde highlights.Cuz it brings out my skin tone.I have kinda olive skin.Do u have any pics for us to see?I'd love to see your hair.Well, good luck, girl!

Loreal I think has a line just for brunettes meant to take dark browns to a lighter brown. I think it's called true brunette. You could check them out.

Okay so here is my problem. I have a natural, very dark brown hair color. Black if you will. I am aiming for a light brown color. Like around the same color as L'oreal Feria's Downtown Brown or Brownstone. And, I am wondering if it is possible to dye my hair from black to that specific shade of brown without using the double process (bleach - toner - dye). If it is possible to JUST use the dye, will it bring out an ugly orange color? If it does, is there anyway to avoid the orange with just using a dye with my hair color?

If it is not possible to avoid the double process , is it possible to skip the toner part?

P.S: What exactally does "brassiness" mean?

Edit: I plan to use permanant hair dye.
