Hi nursie,

Thanks for the input.  The problem is though that the whole thing needs regular recoloring because I am just using a demi-permanent, which washes out even faster than a semi-permanent, but I've been told, looks more natural.

im not very knowledgeable about the coloring of gray, but when i was keeping my hair bleached platinum i had to touch up my roots every three weeks, so i became very adept at placing the color ONLY on the roots and not overlapping onto previously bleached hair
instead of using the pointed nozzle on the bottles provided, i put the hair color in a small bowl, make partings with a rat tail comb and using a wide flat paintbrush (i bought one at the beauty supply store, but ones from craft stores are very similar) and put the color only on the roots

maybe someone will chime in about what color is best for gray, good luck :)

Hi,

I am 36 and my hair is about 80% gray.  I am a male.  The gray hair makes me look 50, so 'sexy' or not, I can't go there.

I heard that 'demi-permanents' are better for gray coverage because they are more 'multi-tonal'.  I don't want "Darth Vader" helmet hair (one solid un-natural block of color).

The problem is, my hair grows VERY fast and the gray roots start showing after only 3 days.  My hair is about an inch and a half long all over.

The demi-permanent seems to fade pretty quick and get reddish.  This leaves me redoing my whole head about once a week.  I have not found this to damage my hair since it is demi-perm (seems quite healthy), but it does cause a "color buildup" where the hair starts to be darker than i want.

Also, if I just try to color the roots, it is VERY hard not to get my entire head wet as the hair is short.

Any ideas for me?

I'm going for a medium smokey brown.
