want all over color and hi-lites

Hi all! I`ve been coloring my hair at home for several months with wonderful results; recently went to an upscale salon for a do and they raved about the color. I want to continue coloring, but I also want to add highlights for more dimension, etc. My natural color is dark brown and I color to a deep burgundy, so that it`s a little darker with a reddish tint. I would very much appreicate any advice, like should I highlight THEN all over color or vice-versa, etc. Thanks so much! ~Elle
