Here's a method. If ur hair is extra coarse, brush it forward, get waves, and then get a handful of moisturizer and gel and push against the grain because ur hair will be more manegeable after being straightened out by the brush. I mean, waves are s-curls layed down if u think about it. Just push it back up.
 
I used to rock curls before i started wavin. All i did was get a handful of eco styler gel and drown my hair in it. It wasn't too healthy for my hair for i had mad flakes from this and my pillows would be grimey if i didn't wash off the gel.
 
I don't know what kind've hair u got dude but curls came natural for me. just put gel in ur hair i guess.
