That is a great suggestion Alayney. I have sniffed out a couple potentially bad dye jobs that way. Because when you say that and they reply,"None of us are specialist but very good at our jobs" You know you may want to look elsewhere!

When looking for a salon professional to color/bleach my hair I always ask them who they have working there that is a "color SPECIALIST" -- that way they know I want someone who REALLY KNOWS their stuff and has studied it and has EXPERIENCE. It's not 100% foolproof but it has helped. You really gotta ask questions and find out about the person who is doing your hair. That said, I've also had "master stylists" screw me over royally.
Good luck -- I KNOW you can get what you want!

I have naturally medium brown hair.I went blonde a year ago but after a couple months decided to go back to my natural hair color, so I put a medium brown color on my hair, but that turned out way darker than my natural but I wasn't too bothered at the time and just kept dying my roots to match.
But, recently I have been fed up with how dark and dull it looked so I went to the salon to get it lightened. BIG mistake, she turned my hair orange!!! Actually, its very light orange at the roots, then its get a bright orange, and then a darkish orange as you get close to the ends. Its soooo gross.
I went back and tried to complain, but the hair dresser refused to correct her mistake saying that its about as good as I'm gonna get and that I would have to pay more money for her to try and make it look better.
OMG I am furious, I paid well over $100 just for her to give me clown hair. I am so upset, I don't have much money and I really don't know what to do. I'm so embarrased I don't even want to walk outside to get my mail, PLEASE HELP SOMEONE!!!!!!
That is just insanity!
What did she use? Did she use bleach to lighten your hair? If so that's the incorrect way to do this type of lightening. She should have used a professional color remover to remove the artificial pigment in your hair which would have left you with orange brassy hair....this is because the underlying pigment is all exposed after the artificial pigment is removed. From their the hair can be toned with a blue based ash color to get you to more a natural brown. This is corrective color work and it's very complex as everyone's hair reacts differently. The main goal here is to lighten the hair to a more acceptable level by removing the color and then toning the underlying pigment all while maintaining the health of the hair.
Corrective color work should only be done by stylists who truly know the color wheel....where the hair is where is needs to be and what needs to be done to get it there. I don't know where you went but you should contact the manager or the owner and explain the problem.
If that fails then you can always goto a professional salon for corrective color work but IMHO that price typically begins at $150 and goes up from there as high as $300 depending on the length of the hair, what needs to be done etc. It's not a once or two step process and the chemicals involved are costly to complete the work properly.
In closing let me just say that I think it's best if you goto a salon and don't attempt anything by yourself as you could just complicate the problem and cause damage to your hair health.
G'luck

Call the owner of the salon.Tell them you are very unsatisfied with the work the stylist did,and that if they cared about their reputation, they will fix it for free. I spent 300 dollars (no lie) to have a stylist turn my hair white when I asked for a natural looking blonde.I spoke to the person who answered the phones and told them I was not happy. She said the same guy who did my hair would fix it. I told her NO WAY~he didnt listen the first time, someone else better fix it for me. So,the owner himself fixed my hair. I took in pictures of how I wanted it to look and he added in a toner and lowlights.(apparently the other guy bleached my hair and didnt add a toner or anything, just left it white!)
If you dont go back, chances are it will cost even more somewhere else because they will see it as "Color correcting".

I by no means know anything about hair but I've read quite a bit on this forum....
http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip10013.htm
Read this....I don't know if it is specific to your situation but you can decide that.
Take a deep breath and hang in there. I'm sort of in your same situation only with it being to dark. Thank goodness for the baseball cap until I can get some advice!
Hugs,
