I wonder..... if jealous women are responsible for the canard that hair must be cut shorter to look professional. It surely wasn't a man!
Frankly, it's just silly, but to accomodate your superiors, put it up, and let em' all carp about how much more ravishing *your* locks are when they see you outside of work. Esp. if they are with their fawning SO's! Heh heh! Bob
How much will it cost me? I just want a makeover for my hairdo...
Once you learn new styling techniques, you'll feel like you had a makeover! Whatever you do, DO NOT go into a salon and say "I need a hair makeover"!!! They'll surely say the only way is to go short. There's no need for that, believe me.
Be aware that if you go in and say "I want a makeover for my hair" that
will likely mean they convince you that short is the only way to look
professional and they chop it all off for you.
Search for long hair styles, and you will find instructions for many
many updos which are easy. I will even give you some links to a lot of
them:
Just pick a few styles you like and practice doing them on your own time, you will get quicker at it and these will look very elegant and professional.

I usually tie a pony tail. I was working in Dubai prior to this and have just moved to UK. I guess, the competition is very high here and you are required to look best (only then u can get your dream job) !! :)
I think i desperately need a makeover!!

Hi Biji,I agree with Susan. What kinds of styles are you accustomed to putting your hair into? What type of job is it (if I may ask) that requires a "formal" style? (define "formal.") I can't think of any valid reason for a haircut; long hair can be nicely styled for work.

Wow, its lovely. I think it will look very formal and good on me. It will cover the length well. I am from the media industry where you are required to look formal all the time for meetings, exhibitions etc.
I appreciate the help of all you guys.
many thanks

I'm going to suggest the style I wear pretty much every day.
I posted it way back here when someone asked for a work hairstyle.
