holland, thanks so much for this explanation!! I guess my questions are (I still have questions...sorry) when you say "if any hairs get turned" do you mean if a hair's root end gets turned around towards the tip end so it's completely going in the wrong direction?
EXACTLY RIGHT!
When your removing the shorter hairs, you can put a rubberband VERY TIGHTLY around the ponytail about 6 inches down from where it was cut, and then comb everything above it upwards to remove the hairs, or, if your REALLY careful and experienced, you can just hold it VERY TIGHT and do the same thing, which is what I do. I wouldn't recommend it if you were not comfortable though because if you slip or don't grip tight enough, you could turn the whole thing to waste!

Also, when you comb the ponytail up towards the root end from the tip end, do you have something that holds the very tip end taught so the shorter hairs get combed away easily? Because I'm still picturing the ponytail getting teased by combing it upwards.
Thanks!!

Frenchie - yeah, you do save money in the long run by buying and doing it yourself, but I'm not sure if it's enough to be worth it!!!!
Malibu - when you "draw" out the shorter hairs, you are holding the ponytail about 6 inches down from the root end(the end that was closest to the scalp when cut). Then you comb up the ponytail from the "tip" end, (which is the end of the hair where you get it trimmed) towards the "root end". This will take out all of the hairs that are shorter than 6 inches, they just get all caught up in the comb and you throw them away.
Hair has cuticles on it that resemble shingles on a roof all lying in one direction down the hair shaft from the root end to the tips. If any hairs get turned, they tend to clump and tangle in with the other hairs like velcro. Most hair that has been processed is "double drawn" so all the hairs are pretty much one length. Natural hair has different lengths in it due to the shedding and regrowth process.
A lot of hair extensions sold (especially the cheap ones) will mix the hair up from root to tips, strip the cuticles with acid, then coat the hair with silicone to make it shiny and smooth again. But once you start washing it, the silicone wears off and you end up with dry, matted hair. Which is why it is so important to buy "cuticle alligned" hair if you don't to be constantly brushing your hair!
Wow - I can get so carried away when talking about hair!!!!!!!!

Wow! What an amazing job! One would never guess that you do all this work on the ponytails you receive.
I too wonder if you save a lot of money by doing this work yourself rather than buying hair from xxxxxxxxxxx.net and having the hair double drawn (I suppose it is the company we are talking about here!)?
I love the pics, especially the last one!

Holy cow!! So...I would think if you take a comb and comb up the ponytail you would get it all bunching up? It sounds like you're teasing the hair?
Also, when you say end to end and root tips with root tips what does that mean? are you saying that if one hair goes lower than the rest of the hair it will tangle or do you mean if one hair falls out and you put it back in the bunch (and it's facing the wrong direction) it will tangle?
bty, the hair looks gorgeous!!

Do you save a lot of money ordering from this company and doing this yourself? Except for the washing and deep conditioning overnight, it sounds like what I have to do to begin pre-tipping my fusions.
The remy company I use now doesn't have as many short hairs as the one I used before. As a matter of fact I don't remember seeing any. It was as though the old company used them as fillers or something to add weight and bulk to get 4 ounces.
And God help you if you let them slip. You have to divide them into even smaller sections and fan the hair out and separate the ones that slipped so you can salvage that hair or you'll lose most of it when you pull the pre-tips you've made to make sure you don't end up with shedding, geesh!

it comes to me exactly as they cut it off the head. They put it back in a ponytail, bound it with a rubberband, and cut it off. It hasn't been washed or anything, but I've never had a ponytail come to me dirty, greasy, or gross smelling. They are all clean.
I will shampoo and and let the ponytails deep condition overnight. Then I unbind them, draw out the hairs that are shorter than 5-6" (which there are a lot of surprisingly) by TIGHTLY gripping the hair mid shaft, and using a fine tooth comb backwards up the ponytail. This will draw out all the shorter hairs that are useless. Then I will trim the ends at least and inch or two, so the bottoms of the hair are nice and thick, not stringy and thin. So you usually should order the hair a couple of inches longer than what you want the end result to be. I ordered hair that was 23-24 inches long, and most ponytails ended up being about 19 - 21 inches long. Then, I carefully split the ponytails into 2 ounce increments, which I weigh on the scale. The hardest part of the whole process is being extra careful to keep the hair cuticle alligned, root tips with root tips, ends with ends, because if you have even one hair turned in the opposite direction it can create a little ball of tangles. It took me three days straight to do one kilo of hair. So you can see why sometimes it is just easier to order from another company that does all this work for you. Plus, if I were to completely double draw the hair to make it all one length, I would lose SO much hair, and I don't know how to keep the shorter hairs, they do it with a hair hackel, but I can't find anything online that shows how to do this to salvage all of the hair. You can see pic's of the end result at http://jholland7.photosite.com/Album1/?orderprints=true

holland, when you get a raw ponytail and it's single drawn what do you have to do to get it looking good? I would think you need to send it off to get cleaned up? Is it literally cut off and sent to you or do they process it at all?

Thank you Thank you!!!!
I had some russian hair left over from a HUGE order I placed that was single drawn and in original ponytails, which is the only way you can get it when you order by the kilos. It had some GORGEOUS hair, and some pretty good hair. You never know exactly what you're going to get. I've got to look up the company name, it's been a while. I also got some russian double drawn hair from www.xxxxxxxxxxx.net. It was really beautiful also and I didn't have to do any work to it, it was just ready to go. Pretty pricy though.

Well, I'm cosigning with Malibu who cosigned with Sherrie who cosigned with Poose. It looks beautiful! And yes, do tell, where did you get the Russian hair? A bunch of us have become quite the Russian hair addicts in the last few months.
LOL!
Yeah, do tell because I know Tangles would love to try it and after the way she spoke about Gene and Susan too, she needs to try to find another source.
