[QUOTE]uperGrover originally wrote Second of all, they would all tell me, "Oh, you need at least 2 inches off, or 3."
why do hairdressers do this? at last i found a hairdresser that doesn't do that. she use to at first an honestly i stop going to her for awhile. when i started going back i made it clear i was trying to grow my hair long. the only time she would cut more was when i was evening out my layers and we would discuss this.
SuperGrover! I'm really happy for you. Now that you have a sympathetic stylist, I'm sure you can reach your goal!
Lady Maria, I understand what you're saying about how important it is for a stylist to be thoughtful when cutting hair that is already short. I believe the same principle holds true for people who have long hair. (Maria, this upcoming rant is not directed at you.) I agree with all you said, with one exception: "If you cut too much hair off of a long hairstyle you still have plenty of hair."
Unfortunately, that seems to be the attitude of stylists who are not terribly thoughtful to their long-haired patrons. If you cut too much hair off a long hairstyle, you have still cut too much hair.
"A half-inch" is the same absolute distance, regardless of whether hair is 3 inches long or 3 feet long. "A half-inch" trim of 3-inch hair is 1/6 of the hair. Side note to scissor-happy stylists: for long-haired customers who request a "half-inch" trim, do not cut proportionally from the perspective of a short-haired customer -- do not cut 1/6 of the hair in such a circumstance.
SuperGrover is a perfect example of someone who wanted to grow her hair longer but was unable to do so only because her stylists refused to honor her express requests. There is a lesson here for scissor-happy stylists -- disregard the demands of long-haired patrons and you'll lose their patronage.

Before I got married and moved, I had a woman who cut/styled my hair for about 3 years. She was wonderful. I went to her at first for a prom updo, and it just started there. At one point, my hair was in bad shape, and I Went in with no feal idea, and I let her cut it. She had been fixing my hair for a while, and knew how it laid down, the texture, etc. I absolutely LOVED the style she gave me, and so did everyone else. I knew that when I went to her, I had her full attention, and she did only what I asked her to. I had a car wreck about 2 years into her fixing my hair and my hair itself was in a terrible tangled mess. Afterwards when I went to get it fixed back up, she told me I should of called her, and she would of driven up there to me (1 1/2 hours away) and would of helped me to get out the horrible rats nest I had going... When I got married, she fixed my hair, and then told me that it was my wedding gift from her. I appreciated it SOOO much.
Since her, I have not found anyone that I am on the same level with. The woman who cuts/styles my hair now does a good job, but she always tries to convince me to cut off a bit more. This last time, I let her cut it to the part she was talking about, and I really like it. Plus it needed it. I just wish I could pack up Terry (the stylist from above) and take her with me to each duty station we go too!!!

Good hair stylists are as important to people as having a good accountant, a good chef at a resturant or a good mechanic for your car. That may sound silly to some people(especially the mechanic with your car, considering you need a good car to keep you safe on the road) but people like to look good, it makes them feel better and helps their self esteem, and people enjoy the experience of the salon.
Having a beautician you like as a person, enjoy talking with, and who does a great job with your hair, is one of the little pleasures of life! Don't you think that's true?
Oh yes, Maria, definitely true. And having a good haircut and feeling good about the way you look can help in your career. Not only will it make you more self confident, but it's hard to get a job or get promoted if your hair is sloppy or ill-cut. Not that you would lose a job over a bad haircut, but I think you know what I mean. Gotta look professional to be professional.
But anyway, to answer the original question though: I FINALLY have a trusted stylist! For years, I loathed getting a haircut. First of all, despite my telling the stylist to be gentle because I'm tenderheaded and my hair is fragile, all stylists want to attack my hair with a comb. Aaaaaah! I used to be in tears, because I really am tender headed, and they would all pull to hard. And hearing my hair rip in their comb was almost enough to make me cry, too!
Second of all, they would all tell me, "Oh, you need at least 2 inches off, or 3." Now, my hair used to be really damaged, so they were probably right. But in recent years, I was still hearing it. And even when I put my foot down and insisted on 1 inch maximum, they would still go ahead and take off more.
So for my birthday this year, I splurged on an $88 Haircut at this place in Manhattan called Long Hair Care Group. I reasoned it was worth the money, since I usually only get 2 or 3 cuts a year anyhow. It was amazing! The shop's owner, Robert Gallagher cut my hair and he actually knew how to treat my hair! I've been waiting until after my second appointment to write a review here, but to be honest with you, I think I'm already hooked.
Before, I was never confident that I COULD grow my hair waist length. My hair has been bra length for YEARS because hair stylists kept cutting off as much as I'd grown. I've honestly been trying to grow it waist length for like 6 years now, but it's always been bra length. I was frustrated and ready to give up and get a short cut. Now, with this new stylist, I think I can actually get to my goal of waist length hair!
Wow that's a long answer. But I'm so happy! Had to tell you all.

i trust my hairstylist. i make sure she shows me how much she is going to trim off. my husband on the other hand feels where he would go they would not cut it right. for many years he learn to cut and style is hair. he even frosts it himself.
Well Dave as you know I'm a former long haired lady so I know when you say you don't want alot of hair cut off, that is just what you mean, you don't want much cut! And I know some beauticians are "scissors happy". If you want to keep your hair long you certainly don't need that type of stylist!
With short hair like I wear now, it is equally important to have a good stylist that you trust. If you cut too much hair off of a long hairstyle you still have plenty of hair. If you cut too much hair off of my short style I would hardly have any hair!
Plus a short style has to be very carefully cut and styled, it shows more, so to speak, because you have such a little amount of hair to begin with.
That is why a good beautician is important if you want to look good and have your hair the way you really want it, with long or short hair!

Or are you desperately seeking a sympathetic ear at the salon(s) you visit?
I have been very fortunate in this regard, with the exception of a bad experience early in my grow-out days (I think the stylist closed his ears because he didn't do as I requested, as if he was on auto-pilot). Since, I have been to a large number of different stylists (of necessity, due to travel, changed location of residence, etc), and every one has done very nearly exactly what I had asked for. Maybe that's one reason my hair grew so long, because when I asked for a half-inch trim, that's what I got...? !
So anyway, share your stories; how many of you are happy with your hairstylist?
