Thanks for the words of wisdom! After I posted my message I was searching the board for more info, and found a lot of complimentary remarks about long silver/white hair. Thanks to all the nice comments, I'm actually looking forward to having more gray hair! =)

Hi Holly

About 30% of my hair is white - the rest is black. Length-wise it's a couple of inches below my shoulders - so I don't yet qualify as a longhair.

However, I totally sympathize with you. My white hairs are coarser, thicker and curlier than the others. And yeah, they are a rebellious bunch - sticking out all over the place if I don't tame them.

What can I advise you to do?
Heavy oiling!! This brings the critters into line like nothing else I've tried.
A close (but expensive) second choice is Phytotherathrie's PhytoDefrisant relaxing gel. I think you may be able to get it from the HairBoutique Marketplace, if you are interested.

Personally, I think the white hair's are beautiful even if unruly - hey, we all get stubborn with age!!!
I look forward to having all my black hairs replaced by white eventually (hurry UP guys).

Oh, also, lime/lemon juice rinses are great for keeping the whites pure white. Sometimes they dull up if you are around smokers and due to pollution etc. You can buy shampoos that clean up grey hair (Aveda's Blue Malva comes to mind) but I find the lime juice just as effective.

Lastly, I hope you enjoy the unique quality and colour of your hair and find ways of growing together.

Take care

Hi,

My mom has long gray hair to her bra strap. The problem is that the hair is very coarse compared to the rest of her hair and it doesn't hold color at all. She likes it that way but I think for some it could be a problem. Only time will tell if that is your challenge or not with longer gray hairs.

I have inherited prematurely gray hair from my dad's side of the family. I'm only 25 and I estimate I have about 10%-15% gray hair. It's so wirey that the short hairs stick straight out. My hair is just past my shoulder blades, and since my gray has increased noticebly in just the past 6 months, I've decided to keep growing it long (at least to my waist.) I can't color it since it is too resistant, and looks brassy after a week anyway. Does anyone else have long gray hair? It does seem fuller and mose resiliant than the rest of my hair, but I'm wondering if it is hard to manage? That would explain all the short-permed-gray hair ladies I seem to see. What is your experience with your long gray hair?
