amen Diva! i think you're right. This stylist knew i was annoyed, and i talked to her..she knew i wasn't happy..this is a posh hair salon in San francisco...It is strange, but i have noticed that the white clients do not put up with that type of behaviour from the stylists..the gay stylist bend over backwards to keep their clientele happy..
If Dana screws up with her white clients - they just go over to one of the gay guys in the salon..Dana is the only black female in the place..
Apparently, she has "problems with her personal life", but i notice the gay guys do too, but they don't let it get in the way of making their money. They have their clients in- and - out..while i'm still sitting under the dryer studying...when one of them said "Oh, you're waiting for Dana? Honey, that't her signature, someone's always sitting under the dryer"..
I have other options, and Dana has started the process..but it doesn't mean we're joined at the hip - nor that she has "control" of my hair growth..
I think i'll head back over to the better salon - the one that i first went to....and have this gay guy maintain my hair...i wasn't sure about how i wanted my hair when i first came to him...and he introduced me to Dana..now that we have the foundation set..he can maintain it..
His salon is far more professional than Dana's anyway..The management does not tolerate the lack of professionalism that i've seen in Dana's salon..oh, by the way? after we had that "talk"..she didn't charge me a dime for doing my hair, plus gave me extra accessories to maintain my hair - free..i guess that's supposed to keep me coming back?
some days, it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.

Sorry, but I've learned over the years that the way it "usually is" at many black salons is NOT the way it has to be.. After YEARS of dealing with unprofessional stylists I am no longer gonna put up with:
Stylists who can't EVER be on time for appointments (I may have something to do when I leave the salon. It would be nice for the stylist to arrive ON TIME so I don't have to rearrange my entire day because YOU were late)
Stylists who double book clients. (Unless you have two COMPETENT assistants, you CAN NOT do three relaxers on THREE women who are all booked at 9 am!)
Stylists who sit me under the dryer to kill time while they: ~Eat ~Talk on the phone ~Smoke ~Drink ~Get high ~Pick up their kids from daycare ~Go outside to talk to their man, girlfriend, baby's daddy, etc ~Run to the grocery store ~Run home to feed their dogs ~Run to the carwash ~Buy CDs, DVDs, tee shirts, shoes, purses, designer jeans, fish dinners, etc from the solicitors who drop by the shop ~Take a "quick" nap
Stylists who leave me sitting for any length of time because they SIMPLY do not know how to manage their time.
My time is valuable, and I will not WASTE it sitting in a salon for HOURS at a time.. It doesn't HAVE to be that way, and for me no matter how good a stylist is I will NOT allow my time to be abused. IMO it is simply UNPROFESSIONAL, SELFISH, ARROGANT and just plain old RUDE for stylists to continue engaging in these kinds of business practices.. So I say DITCH THE HEIFA!!!! She has no respect for your time, and she thinks that you are somehow asking for the world by demanding common courtesy. Take your time to look around. There are LOTS of talented stylists who do not engage in this type of business practice..
My current stylist is the BOMB and she understands the importance of TIME MANAGEMENT.. which means she books her appointments in a reasonable manner. If she has clients who's appointments overlap, it's because she knows how to work on two people at once without using the hair dryer as a babysitter/staging area.. So it is possible.. Good luck girl..

I've been going to the stylist since I was about 9 years old. I just expect to be there all day. I bring magazines and chat it up with the other clients. I expect to be there for at least 3 to 4 hours. It also takes me about this long to do my hair at home. What if you were her first client in the morning? Or have a talk with her. If she's doing a good job on your hair hold on to her.

I think that if your first feeling is to change her than you should do that. You know what you want in a stylists, it will take time to find a new one but you have to do what is right for you.

OK, i know it may sound silly, but i'm learning to walk away from beauticians or any business, that doesn't do business well. The beautician that i am seeing now, is very experienced...but she annoys the hell out of me.
1) She told me when we first consulted that she doesn't "double-book" her appts. Yes, she does. Everytime i've been there, she's late, and has two people "going" at once. Me - makes three..
2) Everytime i show up, at 4:30, or before, i'm not out of there until about 8:00 or 9:00..This is from sitting me under the dryer, for roller set (once), or a deep condition..This only takes about 40 minutes. The roller set wasn't worth it anyway..it didn't last 24 hours..plus it frizzed up so badly, that it looked like someone walked up and set their f**cking poodle on my head.
3) After the dryer turns off after 40 minutes - i sit there for another 45 minutes or longer, waiting for her to finish up another client.. The first night, she had me waiting for about an hour while she ate, and was on her cell phone, in the back hall way..i went to the bathroom-twice, and heard her clear as day - she later came back to work on me, and pretended to be finished with a client and said "Now, we're ready! whew, she was a tough client!"
4) One of the gay beauticians saw me sitting by the dryer and said "that's Dana's signature"..then played it off as a joke..
5) This last time, i showed up at 3:45, wasn't seen until 5:00. She had an "emergency walk-in" who basically took advantage of the situation..and left all three of the clients who had "booked" appts. sitting at the wash bowl, sitting next to the dryer (that was me), or waiting in the reception area..
6) I protested and said "I'm getting a new beautician"..one of the gay guys, heard it, and grabbed Dana..as i was getting my hair rinsed out, they were talking low to each other and laughing - right over my head. .. the gay guy said "This ain't no penthouse, honey" i was pissed..
I have been taking such good care of my hair..that i don't think i need a beautician at this point..but i will need one for my texturizing touch up..
