Use a good clarifying shampoo. Paul Mitchel Shampoo Two is exelent for oily hair. It controls the oil but won't dry out your hair. There is also a hair product line called Salerm which makes an oil control line for oily hair. Their products are great. I love them. I've found it in alot of salons here in Miami. If salons in your area don't carry it you can google it. I know they sell it online.
Sarsvati is spot-on. I had a similar problem and paradoxically had to stop washing my hair as much, and using more conditioner. Most people wash their hair too much. You should also avoid using really harsh shampoos that dry your scalp out.
Hi julia. I wouldn't recommend purposely drying out your hair. Not only
imay your hair end up looking frizzy and fried, but it's also a
temporary solution and it sounds like you want something more
permanent. Unless you actually want ot change your hair color for the
color itself, in which case I say go for it, and you can probably still
keep it looking healthy if your do it right and be nice to it in every
other way.
I also had the same problem as you and fixed it within the last year. I
had hair that needed to be shampooed daily. And if I missed a day it
would be so greasy that my stepdad would make funny of me saying you
could fry bacon with the grease on my head. The thing is we
produce sebum to protect our hair. and when we start washing our hair
every day, our scalp tries to compensate by speeding up the oil
production. IT becomes a vicious cirlce where we have to wash every
day. SHampoos are also very harsh and drying, which only makes it
worse. THe only way to stop this cycle is simply to wash your
hair less and let the scalp adjust. Oh you'll look like a grease ball
at first, but it works.
At the moment I haven't washed my hair in 2 weeks and it only looks
slightly oily. But I went hard core and did water only for 3 months.
You don't have to go that extreme. but it doesn't the job pretty quick
and hard. You can click on the thread about it at the bottom if your
curious.
I started out with a less hard core way of just cleaning my hair with
conditioner instead of shampoo. It's not as harsh and it much better
for your hair. You have to do it a certain way to actually get your
hair clean, so if your curious just let me know and I 'll explain clean
your hair though. ALthough it gets greasier faster than if you shampoo
since your not stripping the oils as much. But since it's not as drying
as shampoo, your scalp will slowly learn to produce less oil ot
accommodate. So I started out Coing and stretching my washing times out
so that I would let my hair be greasy for a day before I washed it. I
would also let it be greasy anytime I was just going to stay at home or
if I wore a hat that day. I got to wahsing every 3 days with the third
day looking pretty greasy. Took oh, I think 6 months though. But my
hair was healthier and the oil production did slow. FOr instance,
If I shampood I could go 3 days without it looking greasy and it would
start ot look greasy on the 4th day.
It's not easy if your very self conscious about looking greasy. But you
can always wear your hair up on the greasy days , and you do that
anyway. But i'm telling you, if your wash less, your scalp will
eventually learn that it doesn't need to produce as muich grease.
Good luck with figuring your hair out. I'm sure you will and it will
look fabulous. ANd if you have any questions about anything I said just
asdk. I'm happy to help cause I've been there girl so I know what it's
like. Good luck!
I have pretty good hair its healthy and pretty shiny the thing is though its so oily I never get to enjoy my hair unless its freshly washed. I am sick of my hair and realized the other day all I ever do with it these days is put it in a ponytail. Anybody else with oily hair how have you learned to deal with it? I have been thinking about doing something to it lately. Once I had a perm and my hair looked awesome it dried my hair out enough that I only had to wash my hair like twice a week. It also had lots of body and lasted six months. The thing is though when I got the next perm my hair was fried so I could not figure out how to keep it permed. My hair is totally natural now and I am considering maybe some kind of processing to it just to dry it out a little. Maybe not something as harsh as a perm like maybe highlights in a slightly lighter color or processing it with a semi permanent haircolor. The thing is though I want long hair at least to the middle of my back and I am not sure if I could sucessfully keep up with these things without frying my hair. Is there any of you out there that have hair to the middle of your back and are able to keep up with semipermanent hair dye or highlights? Thanks for your input.
