Thanks all

I used ganier belle blonde lightener to remove the black (to pre-lighten my hair) which came out for the most part a red brown, then i used another belle shade of brown to cover the very light roots and I am satisfied with the results. I didnt even fry my hair, yay me. yay ganrier belle. Now I can leave it to grow out naturally.

I agree with all of that.  Go for color remover.  If you really want the change to be gradual, its going to mean you have to remove the black, then dye it brown colors, then lift those out again to dye blonde.  Gradual is going to make it more of a pain and more damaging than just going straight there after the color remover.  Once you remove the color, your hair will likely come out orange or yellow (your natural haircolor now because even the darker dyes have pigment removing chemicals in them).  It won't be too hard to go light brown or blonde from that.

Remember your color wheel.  Remember that if it comes out yellow after removal, you'll need a dye with a violet base to counter the yellow, and if it comes out orange, use a dye with a green or blue base to counter the orange.  Make sure all of your hair is the same color before dyeing it too, if you have any miscolored spots after the color removal (such as orange spots on hair that is mostly yellow...or yellow roots with orange hair because of your head heat), they will likely still be miscolored after you dye it again...using the color remover again on the darkest spots only can help even them up before you redye so all your hair will have a better chance to come out the same.

And test strand!

Hi,  You can't lighten your hair with dyes.  Color will not lift color.  If you put blonde in your black hair it might turn orange in some places or not take at all.  I suggest buying a color remover that you can buy at a beauty supply.  This will lift all the color out of your hair and then you can recolor.  It is not damaging.   Follow the instructions to the letter.  Good luck.  Also black is not hardest color to get out but it is not impossible I did it once.

Hello

I've been dying my hair black (with another brand) and been doing this for more than 2 yrs., I'd now like to go back (gradually if possible) to my natural, or as close as I can get with dyes.

My question is, if i use a blonde colour to dye it, which in theory should lighten the black to at least a brunette (I live in hope here), would it work?

My natural colour was light brown and had both reds and golds in it naturally. So my theory was if I dyed my black hair starting with a dark blonde shade, it would lighten up the black maybe even do it over a few months? Maybe dark blonde for a couple months then try a brown as close to my natural as possible on the thrid month?

Would this work?
