Want to make Hair feel less stiff and more smooth.

Let me give you some information about myself that may help:
I am a male
I am indian
I have dark, dark, brown hair (pretty much black).
I cut my own hair, and give myself a #1 buzz cut
I use standard shampoo (Pert, etc) everyday (use a pea sized amount)
I live in Texas (I hear the different types of water in different regions affect your hair)

My hair always feels very stiff, and I am wondering if there is any sort of product I can use to change this and make it much smoother.

Also, I have heard people say not to shampoo everyday, but I am usually pretty active and the weather is pretty hot here, so, at times, my head can get hot and sweaty.  This is why I clean it everyday.
