QuoteReplyTopic: dark brown to blonde... how far to go? Posted: September 14 2007 at 3:49pm
To be honest my husband & I think u shouldn't color it at all.U have very pretty dark hair.Blonde is the worse for your hair.I could understand it if u had a ugly color like my natural color.Mine is golden brown.I say u r lucky to have that choc. brown hair.If u wanted something diff. & easy.I'd do red highlights.I color mine red all over.Plus, coloring over hair with red tones r very hard to get that pretty blonde color.I like dark hair better myself. If I were u, I'd really think before I did it.I think u should try a Loreal red hightlights color.Go to Sally's & look at the high lift colors for dark hair only. It's in a red box , I think.Watch out for anything that says orange base,or gold.I say that because it will look coppery color after it fades.Keep in mind that red color fades the most.I think a blue base or a violet color base would be good for u.U will see the base color on the box. It's the undertone in the color.I hate copper. That would be gross.U should tell your husband about my idea & see what he says.Well, good luck!!!
Yes, I think your hair is beautiful too. Personally wouldn't change a thing. A blonde wig would be fun for you though. The only reason I change my hair is because I used to be a yellow-golden blonde as a child and I really wanted my color back. I'm glad you will be keeping your color , do what makes YOU most happy.
So I showed my husband this thread, to show him how hard it would be and what we'd have to do, and I warned him ahead of time that I called him an ass in the thread for only wanting platinum blonde. He got really mad and we fought and he said "What the hell is my favorite hair?!" And of course, I knew what to say. Mine is his favorite. He hates it when I straighten it because he likes it messy and curly. It didn't really hit me until after it came out of my mouth how sweet he is. I don't really think he's an ass. He's such a sweet guy, and I hurt his feelings. :(

Thanks, Rebekah! I'm beginning to understand this a little better. I'm going to have to bleach to yellow or lighter and then tone to get believable color. Do I do both steps on the same night?

My hair...hmmm--the first time I ever colored it, it was RED, not a bad color really but not what I wanted.
My natural color is a lightest golden brown, which means anything I do to my hair tends to go "gold" or "red", unless I bleach to pale yellow.
That picture is of a tone on tone color. Since my undertones are mainly "red and gold" I use a green based dye or ash to color my base. Miss Clairol Moongold 42D,(medium ash blonde-warm) with 25 vol. peroxide for about 35 min. Every 3 months, or even longer, I add some highlights with L'Oreal Excellence Creme Lights. I used to use a cap to do this, but realized that I get the same results by selecting a few strands placed where I want them (I style my hair and put them where I want--a lot of work by the way), I use foils to do this--no more than probably about 6 to 10. Tone on tone works nicely if you find two colors that compliment each other, the ash on my hair looks GOLD, then I blend a few light gold highlights in there, and I'm done.
I'm very careful with my hair, trying not to curl it too often, and only shampoo it every other day or so. I use conditioners every time and I have stuck with the same color for awhile now. I don't change from light to dark ever, which will kill your hair. Most importantly, I do it myself and don't ever let anyone else touch it, LOL! I've had it fried a few times by professionals.
LOL. Yes, I told him. He wants to maintain it ourselves. He is willing to pay someone to do the color the first time, but he thinks we can do the touchups and roots ourselves. That's why I'm here -- to learn how to do this.

good idea about the wigs....i thought i would look good w/golden blonde hair---i am a natural redhead with blonde in it....well, i WAS WRONG....it washed my complexion out....when i added copper i looked sooo much better....there are so many shades of blonde that the wig idea is good....is ass hubby prepared to pay for you to go to a salon to maintain this look? is the ass ready to pay for the toning and such if you run into problems? did you tell him he is an ass?
I'd love to end up with hair like yours! What color are are you naturally? How did you get it so natural-looking with so much depth without frying it? THAT's what I want!

Here's what I would do if I were you...seriously. Go buy a wig and wear it for awhile to see if you like being blonde first. Yes, you can go blonde and maintain it, but it's expensive and a lot of work to keep pretty. You have to tone a lot and bleach every 4 to six weeks, only the roots though. Then there is the struggle to keep your hair a pretty blonde and not a brassy color. If you don't want to try a blonde wig then try some on to decide what color you like best.
I suggest going blonde all at once because it's the going gradual that can really fry your hair. Why? Highlights are usually first, then it's practically impossible to separate those out when you want to bleach it all...by the way no time needed really in between bleaching.
On second thought, you can go blonde, not plat of course, with heavy highlights then start bleaching the entire head to gradually go blonde, but there may be a problem with overlapping later.
Good luck, I hope you decide what suits you best. Honestly, I wouldn't go plat just because hubby wants me to. I'd purchase a wig and save my beautiful hair, lol!
I actually have my hair a tone on tone golden blonde, which I like. Hubby would like it lighter, but it's just too much work for me, and I like this color better anyway, .
Now my husband is saying that he's not paying for ANYTHING unless I go platinum. :( What an ass. So how much time do I need between bleachings? I'm I going to be able to maintain this?

I want to go in steps because I'm afraid to commit to all-out blonde without knowing what I'll look like and without knowing if the color is going to turn out how I expect it to. I know I am going to need some time to get used to it, and I think I can do that better if it gradually lightens over time instead of just being a blonde one day. You guys really think I should do it all in one step?

Yes, you can bleach in steps, but why bother...unless you want to adjust to the shock of being plat from black...lol.
If you have virgin hair I would recommend getting some bleach at Sally Beauty supply with 20 vol. It may take up to three bleachings to get your hair to a nice shade in order to tone it. It needs to be bleached the color of the inside of a ripe banana color--pale yellow. Then you can choose a toner to get the color nice.
Hair can usually take three bleachings. Bleach will last on the hair and bleach the color out as long as it isn't dry for 90 min. After that rinse it off and start again with a new batch. Prior to bleaching strand test to see how long it's going to take to bleach. First you will need to apply the bleach to the ends and midshaft, last apply to the roots. If you don't do it this way you can get what is called hot roots...when the bleach makes the roots a lighter shade than the rest of the hair...If hubby wants blonde then get him to help you with this job...it's really going to take someone else to get the bleach applied evenly and thoroughly. If the bleach is not even, then you will get spots and have to rebleach those.
I wouldn't get a blue based bleach, personally, because you really cannot tell how light the hair is with those bleaches, as they tone while bleaching. Get a white bleach--on the scalp--and 20 vol. peroxide...STRAND TEST and time that strand test...you will likely have times close to that, not exact, but you'll get a good idea.
I think this is all I can think of please ask if you have more questions. Good luck. Oh, by the way if you only want to go to a medium blonde then you only have to bleach the hair to that shade of undertone and then tone, but plat can be done.
Blonde hair is expensive to upkeep and is very damagaing, especially to dark hair. You'll need good conditioners and to take good care of your hair.
Good luck, hope this helps, and let us know what you decide.
