First of all only recolor the new growth...then use a toner or a demi for the other part of the hair if necessary. I use Igora toning mousse after I color when it starts to fade...it might work to even the color. Just an idea. Scroll down a bit and then you will see the swatches that might work with your hair.
NO. The people at Sally's are not trained hairstylists. If you do a search on here you may be able to find many people who have been given bad advice by the people who work there.Most of them have about as much knowledge as you or I. (If that)
My only other suggestion would be to ask a professional,or try a lighter color since you didnt like the darker. I have read alot that woman with greys find blondish colors to be easier to use when covering grey.
So,maybe a blondish red might work. I would still look into the color depositing shampoo.

Thanks for the input! The different colors are on top of the head, around the face and then the back....and actually, I think under the sides around the face is a different color but it may match the back.
I've tried a darker color (instead of lightest auburn, I used light auburn) and it was too dark. It looked very unnatural.
I can go to Sally Beauty Supply. Do you think the people that work there will be able to help me or should I go in knowing what I need?
I color my mom's gray hair. I use 20 volume developer at the grey roots and 10 volume on the non gray hair & to refresh every other time for the last 5 min of the dye job (she has red, so it fades). I always apply the dye to the roots first and let it sit 15 extra minutes before I start on the other dye (if doing a new color)
In general it's not a good idea to color the whole head if you're redoing the same color because the already colored hair just gets coated and coated, ends up looking dull etc.

Edit--so yes, I guess I would try a different color. Try going to Sally's Beauty. You buy the developer for a couple bucks (a big bottle) and each thing of color is like $4. Then you have to buy a brush, but after a while it's much cheaper, because the developer will last forever

I think alot of people trying to cover grays have this problem.
I would suggest maybe a slightly darker color,or some color depositing shampoo and conditioner. All haircolor tends to fade out and wash out,so color depositing shampoo and conditioner helps put just the color back in while in between dyeing.
ARTec is good,you can order it online.
Or try john Frieda luminous color glaze (walmart,cvs,rite aid) which is similar it adds color.

Hi! I am a natural redhead...strawberry blonde when I was a kid and now more of an auburn color naturally. About a year ago, I had a lot of gray so started coloring to cover up the gray. I have been using Preference by L'Oreal in a Lightest Auburn color. It looks okay (lighter than natural color, but that's okay) when it's first done but after about two weeks, my hair is about three different shades of red and gold. Any suggestions on how to get it to stay one color? A different brand? A different color? Not coloring the whole head at one time? Thanks for your help! :-)
