The all over color WILL cover up your highlights. In fact,I'd be careful, because if you are trying to pick a color to counteract orange,on your highlights it may turn something else like green.
Pick a section of hair with all of the colors and highlights to DO A STRAND TEST WITH FIRST.
I have had highlights turn out PINK before while coloring overtop of them.
Also, the color on the highlights will probably wash out fast.
To get the highlights on brown hair, yes, you will have to bleach. However,an at home highlighting kit should suffice. Just follow the directions.

Hi every1! This is my very first post on here. I have some questions about coloring my hair at home.
I used to use drugstore haircolor for several years, until a few months ago, when I began going to a salon for all-over color and highlights. I can no longer afford to do so, but really like the look of highlights in my long, straight hair. It really adds dimension.
My natural hair color is light-medium ash brown. My hair is very porous, and whenever it is colored (even when an ash is used), it turns brassy orange. HATE THAT! I've read the sticky on haircolor by Claude and been reading on various websites on how to counteract that. I'll also be choosing products from my local Sally Beauty Supply, as well as possibly online, instead of the drugstore. I have a few questions on what I'd like to do, if anyone can help me.
Right now, my hair looks like: Roots (3-4") are light-med. ash brown, below that is prev. colored/highlighted. Color is light brown and very, very brassy-orange. This appeared within two weeks of light-med. ash brown permanent color being applied (to cover brassiness that was there BEFORE. It's a never-ending cycle!) Highlights still look great and are dark beige blonde. Not brassy.
I want my hair to look like: My all-over color to be my original color, with beige blonde highlights. No orange in sight.
I've read that I should try using a protein filler on my hair prior to the coloring process, to help with the porousness. I *think* I'll need a blue based (not green) light-med. ash brown demi on the colored portion (as not to damage it), and possibly apply some sort of blue additive, to enhance the ash and counteract the orange. What I don't know is which developer to use for this, and...WHAT ABOUT THE HIGHLIGHTS? I really want to keep them. Will the color cover my highlights? The last time I went to the salon, my stylist "weaved" brown permanent color all over, to counteract the brassiness, but seemed to have covered some of the top layer highlights, so I don't want that to happen more. Yikes.
I think my highlights are about 3 levels lighter than my all-over color, but how do I go about this? Do I need to use bleach? If so, how?
